Hello there. I have an ASUS A7V8X motherboard. My Maxtor hard drive (DiamondMax plus 9) went bad so I put in a new Seagate ST340015A hard drive and then installed XP. Then, the device manager indicated three yellow question marks under 'other devices'. Although it recognized the devices (ethernet controller, RAID contoller, and Multimedia Audio Controller), it did not recognize the manufacturer, therefore I didn't know what drivers to look for. I thought it might have been a problem with the XP installation, so I reformatted the disk and installed Win 2000 Professional, only to find the same thing happened, this time with four yellow indicators in the device manager *(ethernet controller, RAID contoller, Video Controller, and Multimedia Audio Controller), all of which give an error code 28 (drivers for this device are not installed), but still doesn't recognize the manufacturer. I tried downloading some generic drivers from ASUS, and even put in the ASUS motherboard CD, but drivers were not found. I am suspecting that there might be some kind of compatability issue with the Seagate HDD and the ASUS motherboard? This problem wasn't happening with the former Maxtor HDD. I really don't know what to do and need to get my computer up and running on the internet. Any advice would be most appreciated. I really need someone's help.

Thanks.

Allan

P.S. Here is the info from the device manager - properties:

Ethernet Controller
Device type: other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCI bus 0, device 9, function 0

Multimedia Audio Controller
Device type: other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCI bus 0, device 17, function 5

RAID Controller
Device type: other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCI bus 0, device 8, function 0

Video Controller
Device type: other devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCI Slot 7 (PCI bus 1, device 0, function 0)

Please help me! Thanks.

The drivers for the 1st 3 items should be on the CD that came with your motherboard. How are you trying to install them? If you are using the device manager/driver update route, they will probably not be automatically found, it's best to put the driver in & either let it autorun,or, if that isn't set up, look for the setup.exe file & run from that. For the video, you are best to follow the same route. Once you've installed the motherboard drivers you will probably find that, as well as the first 3 items, there will be chipset drivers installed from the motherboard CD which will allow your video card to be set up correctly afterwards.

John....Thanks for your help. I followed your advice and tried both ways of installing the drivers from the ASUS CD. The device manager locates the devices, but says that the drivers aren't installed. So when I try to update drivers via the device manager, it says that 'the correct drivers cannot be located'. When I try to install directly from the CD, it says that the 'correct hardware cannot be found' and the installation ends. When I open up 'properties' for each faulty driver on the device manager it states that the manufacturer is 'unknown'. So this really confuses me. It is like the computer recognizes what is missing but won't let me install what is needed. Any ideas?

Please help me! Thanks.
