ASH buy that board i build the same system you refering to with a p4 2.4 533 bus speed and its running super for a friend i would highly recomend that motherboard and i love AMD cpus so thats a really a nice review from me..

oh did you know that tomshardware.com gave it a 96% good review and says its one of the best motherboards made currently tomshardware.com is a highly rated reviewer in all forums.

hey, thanks david! tell me, did your friend run into any problems cranking it up or was it smooth as glass? also what kind of case and ram did he use exactly? and lastly, what video card did he choose? sorry bout all the questions. i just feel like i should not try and re-invent the wheel. id feel alot safer knowing what components will work together. thanks again man!

Hi Ash,
This may answer some of your questions just in case David dosn't make it back to this thread.
My son and I just got finished building systems around this board. Here are the specs for these two machines:
Son's machine has the P4S8X mobo, 512 MBs Crucial DDR 333, 2.8 P4 Processor, Audigy 2 Soundcard, Radeon 9700 video card in a Themaltake Dragon case. He is a gamer and so far it runs smooth on the standard 1003A bios which came with the mobo.
This machine runs with the P4S8X mobo, 512 Crucial DDR 333, 2.8 P4 Processor, Audigy MP3+ Soundcard, Gainward Gforce 4 TI4200 128 MBs video card in an Antec 1080B case. So far it is smooth with the standard 1003A BIOS.
Things to watch for with this mobo. On my case I can not connect the front USB connections as when I do it disables the secondary IDE channel. Some people have fooled around with the connections to solve this, but it was unclear to me if it was a real fix or not. DO NOT overclock, or use any memory faster than DDR 333. The board becomes unstable if you do. Though others have done this with some success, it is very hit or miss.
Lastly, its OK to read the reviews of websites etc, but keep in mind that most, if not all, of these places are sent items by the manufacturer and do not buy them off the shelf like you and I. Go here and read the results of others, but keep in mind that most of these complaints are from people who are trying to do things with the board that it was not designed to do.

Good luck with your build!

ken,
thanks alot for all the information. i took a look at what people had to say on asusboards.com and i got to say that its kind of scary. im guessing all those people who had bad comments are trying to overclock and run faster ram and all that stuff. i think i was looking at the same antec case that you are using with your machine. do you think they will eventually come out with a fix for the usb support on the front of the case? or, have you tried to use the un-officail fix so you can use your usb port on the front? i even read some comments on that site that said that asus has physically changed the board a little bit since it first came out. its crazy really. if you look at the reviews out there you would think this was the board of the century. but when you go to asusboards.com it seems like the people are going to try and close asus down or something. i dunno! anyhow, thanks alot for your help.

Hi again Ash,
No. Neither my son or I have connected the front USBs. Both of us had front USBs on our old machines and never used them, so it really isn't an issue. Although I must say that it bothers me to have something that doesn't work. Maybe when I go to round cables and open the case again, I'll give it a try.
I don't know about a fix for the front USBs. Seems to me you would have to get a board with a different revsion level as that is a hardware problem. So, if you already have the board, and it doesn't work, then I'm afraid you may be stuck. Though you could return it and hope that they send you a different board in a few weeks.
Yes, the reviews do tout this board very highly and that is why I bought it. Due to money concerns, I had to buy my stuff a little at a time. So I had my board long before I started building and long before the board actually hit the streets in mass. So, by the time I read all the things about it, I was well beyond my 30 days of returning it to where I bought it. I would not have bought it had I read all those negative things beforehand.
Anyway, as I said, so far so good.
Aagain, good luck with your build and I hope you don't run into any problems.

welp, ive decided to go with the asus p4pe. i dont really need the 8x agp. 4x will do fine for me. this board seems to be ok. i hope. thanks again for your help.
