Have Pc bare bone system ordered and it is on the way. But I am shopping memory for MoBo
Asus A7N8X Deluxe , have been reading info on this site. Saw it is waste of money to use Pc3200 , when Pc2700 is sufficient.
I am planning to buy just one 512mb Pc2700 for now because of Windows Me.
As soon I upgrade to xp or W2000, then I add on another memory 512mb Pc2700.
Pc2700s memory speed is 333mhz, in pair of two would it be 666mhz as dual memory(over kill by 266mhz ??)I do not want 2x256mhz.
Just want one 512mb then add another 512 toltalling 1024mb when I change OS.
Anyone ?I am planning to order bare bone pc with
A7N8X Deluxe with one memory stick 512mb RAM.
But I was told it is dual memory and I would have to have two memory sticks. Why?
Right now I have Win

The boards work best if the CPU and memory are the same speed. If your CPU has a FSB equal to 333MHz you are right to get PC2700. You only need faster memory either if your CPU has a FSB faster than 333MHz or your are overclocking.
With the A7N8X you can use 1, 2, or three sticks. You will operating in dua-channel mode if you put sticks in these combinations:
1. slots 1 and 3, OR
2. slots 2 and 3, OR
3. slots 1, 2, and 3
If you use just one stick you will be running with just one memory controller. It is OK to run it that way.PC2700 runs at 333MHz no matter how many sticks you are using. You are thinking about the bandwidth increase in dual-channel mode. The A7N8X has two memory controllers. Each one can transfer 8 bytes (64 bits) at a time. With you use both controllers you get 16 bytes (128 bits) at a time. This is only theory since there are other bottlenecks in the system that limit actual increases in using dusl-channel to at most 3%.
Some people have had problems using certain memory with the A7N8X. You may have problems if you add another 512Mb stick later which might have slihtly different timings. This could cause lockups or random errors. Then you might get lucky and have no problems. There is no good way to know in advance.
I have the A7N8X Deluxe with an Athlon XP2800+ and am using 2x512MB of PC2700 Corsair XMS RAM. I bought the RAM at the same time so I know they should be the same. Some people are more cautious and use matched sets of RAM.

Sounds like I should buy two memory at once and use just one for now until I replace Windows Me by W2000 or xp later on.Pc3200 512mb is it for me.
Asus memory list did not list PNY or Centon (avaiable in Bestbuy or Compusa locally, on sale right now)I am planning to order bare bone pc with
