ASPI Drivers?

Hello everyone,

Let me first give a brief summary of what's been going on.

My friend's DVD-R drive is not working, it is recognized correctly by Windows XP, it's showing up, it reads CDs and everything - but it cannot read DVDs.

It'll continue trying to play the DVD but with little or no progress. What I mean by that is, we can sometimes wait for 5 minutes and nothing will happen - the computer will lock up and the DVD will not be read. Or sometimes it will read the DVD, but not play it.

We did just about everything we could think of, uninstalled other DVD players, installed PowerDVD, installed the latest NVIDIA graphics drivers, uninstalled the DVD-R drive from device manager, rebooted, it was then reinstalled, etc.

So we basically did everything except taking the drive out of the computer and putting it in another one.

Anyways, long story short - someone on these forums (I'm sorry I forget who it was - but thanks!) - linked me to this website, http://aspi.radified.com/

It's about the ASPI layer drivers, and how they can sometimes conflict with the optical devices.

Now, before I continue here is my friends' system specs:

Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
512MB RAM (2x256MB)
Windows XP Home
Master optical drive: DVD-R (not working).
Secondary optical drive: CDRW (working).

The computer was purchased from some computer magazine, I believe - a gaming magazine maybe? So there is nothing wrong with the cabling or anything like that. The DVD-R drive used to be able to play DVDs.

Now he ran the ASPI checker, or whatever. And this is what he came up with:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/aliste20/aspi1.PNG

Here are my system specs:

AMD Athlon XP 2700+ (2.17GHz)
1GB RAM (2x512MB)
Samsung 52x32x52x16 CDRW/DVD-R combo

I ran the same ASPI checker, and here is what I came up with:

http://members.lycos.co.uk/aliste20/aspi2.PNG

Now, apparently I have no ASPI drivers, and yet I can watch DVDs, play CDs, burn CDs, etc. No problem.

He however, has the ASPI drivers, and he cannot play DVDs with his primary optical drive which is the DVD-R drive. But he can play CDs with it.

So what do you guys think that this all means? Should we try to uninstall the ASPI drivers or something? Can they be uninstalled?

I think that there is something physically wrong with the drive. He mentioned it never before sounding the way it sounds when it tries to read a DVD. Sounds kind of sketchy, ya know?

Thanks in advance! You guys are the best! Always willing to help me out! :)

Steven,

You've done a great job of expaling.

No idea why yours works with no ASPI.

But if it sounds funky, it may be the drive.

Hi
the aspi 'drivers' installed are out of date
get the new ones here;

http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/drivers_by_product.jsp?sess=no&language=English+US&cat=%2FProduct%2FASPI-4.70&prodkey=Windows+ASPI+Package

new aspichk'r included in download.
Follow txt file instructions to install.
they should over-write the old ones.
XP without service pack 1 had some issues with certain drives , so check if sp1 is installed.

dropkick,

Quite right, BUT...

In this month's rash of optical drive probs, some have been fixed with a "roll-back" to ver 4.6.

Dunno why, it just does.

Actually some folks have more trouble after updating to the latest version. I don't know what is going on, but most of the problems seem to be with WinXP systems. Maybe a recent update is causing this to happen.

Did you use the ASPI kill and then the ASPI force programs to install different ASPI drivers? This was spelled out in the article I linked to in your prior post.

OtheHill,

I was thinking about killing the ASPI drivers first and seeing if that resolves any issues.

Think that might be a good idea?

I believe you need to have some version of the drivers installed. I don't think rebooting without any will do any harm. In you other thread, correct me if I'm wrong, you couldn't get all the files to install. That is the function of the Force ASPI utility.

O,

Well, maybe that's another good reason to avoid XP; as if another was needed.

Well, no. We haven't even touched anything with the ASPI drivers yet.

Everything we installed, installed fine. PowerDVD, and the NVIDIA detenator drivers.

Apparently you don't need ASPI drivers, they're for SCSI cards I believe.

I don't have ASPI drivers, and I have no problems.

However my friend does have ASPI drivers, and his DVD-R won't play DVDs. I don't think he needs the ASPI drivers. Probably won't hurt to kill them and see what happens.

I think I'll just try killing them. Thanks for the advice everyone! I'll keep you posted.

If you follow my replies you already know that I don't use WinXP and intend to avoid it for as long as possible. I see MS taking more and more control away from the user in the name of stability and security. Yet neither of those goals seem to be any closer than before.

PowerDVD installs ASPI drivers. You DO NEED ASPI drivers for optical drives.

OtheHill,

And yet I have no ASPI drivers, and my optical drives work no problem. Heh.

I also installed PowerDVD, and it did not install any ASPI drivers.

Sooo...?

Try running a Find/ Search from the start menu. Use wildcards *aspi.* See if anything comes up. I read during research on this issue that PowerDVD installs ASPI drivers. I didn't personally verify this.

Me again, you got me to thinking so I looked at my system and I have apix.vxd & wnaspi32.dll version 4.71.1 currently installed. This is of note because I did a rollback to 4.60 not long ago. Look for those files on your machine as well as the reply above. Using find in Win98 produced a number of places that were using aspi dlls. MBM 5, digital camera, scanner, C:\windows\stiaspi.dll, photo editing software

OtheHill,

I've tried using the ASPI checker, and nothing shows up.

Apparently I do not have ASPI drivers installed.

And my optical drives work fine.

Apparently, ASPI drivers are for SCSI devices. I don't believe I have any SCSI devices. Therefor there is probably no need for ASPI drivers.

However as you pointed out a lot of software such as NERO and PowerDVD (PowerDVD is supposed to - but didn't - install the drivers on my computer, or not in the system32 folder?).

(Shrugs) Everything is working on my end, and I'm the one without the ASPI drivers. :)

Hi
well quite an interesting discussion above!

viaro your pc probably doesnt need aspi xp has its own built in iso read/writing format It doesnt have (maybe till sp2 idont know) support for burning of dvd media or ripping like cdda.
more here;
http://aumha.org/win5/a/xpcd.php

http://aspi.radified.com/

alot of 'mastering ' progs come with their built in drivers so you may never have a problem but as is the case a number of ppl
have noted xp really does need an aspi layer support for some older hardware/software apps certasinly nero will replace the xp inbuilt writing capability with its own.

as in the above links its not just for scsi
devices.

Look in nero toolkit, Nero Info. Then aspi tab.

Or Here...
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download120.html

I tried installing SP2 for XP 3 ways.
windows update site
simpleslipper
XP SP2 as a 266mb download.

Easiest for me
XP fresh install
SP2
newest mobo platform drivers from Nvidia
53.03 video drivers
modem/router software
nero
Nero Info tool reports their ASPI driver installed. None else.
Thing is, first run of CDex, box pops up and says....Failed to load wnaspi32.dll. Use the "Native NT SCSI library" driver instead? yes, and then CDex will run and rip. Only glitch following this install order.

Am curious about the ACPI drivers by MS.

Lots of problems with Nvidias newest Video card drivers. Obviosly not meant for my card. Issues wouldnt go away until I flashed the video card bios.

If you would like, I can Email you a packet of info on ASPI drivers, including all listings for ASPI drivers or dlls that reside on my Win98se installation. Let me know if you are interested.
