It may kill the connection. The filter is to be connected on all lines except the modem. In some cases it is not needed on the others.

As Rich says, if you are referring to a dial up modem, yes, you do need the filter.

The filter filters out the high frequency ADSL signals which would interfere with the proper operation of both modem and telelphone. No, it wont slow down your dial up connection.

You can use both an ADSL modem and a dial up modem simultaneously on the same line. The carrier signal on the dial up modem is at to low a frequency to interfere with the ADSL signal but the ADSL signal will interfere with analogue signal if its not filtered out.

This looks like it answers a question I was about to post. In my case, there is another pc in the house used by another person, with dial-up. I was concerned that if I got ADSL for my own pc, their dial-up speed would be adversely affected. Looks like this is not the case from what you are saying.

No, the ADSL will not effect the dial up speed at all.

But if there is somebody else in the house why not get an ADSL router and share the ADSL with them. They could also share the cost.

Sharing an ADSL connection between two or three users in the same house will not have a huge effect on speed either unless everyone decides to download large files at the same time.

SWtuart is right, foolish to pay money and tie up a phone line when you all can share DSL access. Not sure who your carrier is but Verizon sent me an Wireless Access Point (instead of usual Westell modem) I never asked for and don't use because I have a faster modem, but may be you can get that from provider and then just get a usb adapter for second pc.
