Try posting this in the Linux forum and you may get more results. PengAol is an AOL client for Linux. Here's a link to an article and download at Madrakeforum.com:

As for whether Linux will work with your modem, this site might help:

If it's a real modem (not requiring drivers to make up for what in lacks in hardware (i.e. winmodem) then you shouldn't have a problem.
