I'm thinking of eventually buying one of the S series, becuase it's small and light, and can be customized pretty well. I've never seen one in person, but it looks like the screen is pretty wide. Does anyone who has one think it's odd using the wide screen after using a desktop monitor?

I use a Vaio FS series with a 15.4" wide screen.
It's very light (made of titanium) and robust. Travels well on a motorcycle and is very customisable - you can use the Vaio Launcher to make the desktop more Apple-like (oh wonderful Apple gurus!) rather than bog-standard Windows-like.
The wide-screen is brilliant for photographic applications as well as wide-screen DVDs and movies. One thing which I love about it is the higher contrast resolution of the Vaio FS laptops - these are the best screens on the market. Even Apple's technology lags behind Sony's bright screen technology.
I used a 19" desktop monitor before - the 15" laptop is absolutely fine. For website programming, you run into a few margin format problems, unless you remember that you are using 1200x800, or 1600x1024 pixels etc to design your web pages.
If I was to give you a recommendation, I'd say get an Apple Powerbook instead. You have a spare socket to plug into an external monitor to run two screens from the same laptop. The Sony Vaio just can't do that. The advanced Apples also have Bluetooth technology - the Sonys are still lagging behind there......

Well, actually, the S series' screens are 13.3", so I wonder if they are any wider than the FS screens. I'm pretty sure I want a Vaio, becuase I am far from an Apple fan.
Does your FS series support 1024x768? And does it looks stretched out comparatively?

Yes - it does. It stretches out to 1200 x 800
comfortably. It is more of a panoramic computer screen - I like the wider screen - it fits the width of my visual field easier. It's intuitive to use for everything compared to a squat rectangular regular monitor.I agree that the Vaio is an excellent computer and it's a hard call between a Vaio and an Apple powerbook - both have their merits - more merits than others and equal merits in their own right.
