hi, i'm in the market for a cheap but cheerful laptop, and I'm considering getting this asus X50N AP026C, it seems like its a discontinued line since I can't find anything regarding the actual model on any of Asus' websites so i couldn't find in-depth specifications, and the specs listed on the sits I've found it on aren't in-depth enough to answer my questions. Basically, I just wanted to know two things about if anyone could help:

It has a "AMD Turion64x2 TL56 1800MHz", which is fine for what I want it to do, but I am wondering if I can upgrade the processor should I want to in the future or if it will be built in to the motherboard?

It has a "NVIDIA GeForce Go 7000" with "128MB Shared System Memory" - does this mean that the graphic card is integrated into the motherboard and thus not upgradable? I only assume this because it says shared memory. I always thought when a card has shared memory its built into the mobo but I'm hoping I'm wrong.

As you can probably guess I'm no expert when it comes to laptops. Many thanks for any help you may be able to provide in any case.

forget it. my buddy put me straight about how nearly all laptops can't be upgraded. screw it then, for that price I'd want upgradable components. I'll leave it until the laptop industry catches up from the stoneage of computing.

Laptops are made to be very compact in size. That doesn't lend itself to upgrading and besides heat and power consumption are primary considerations.

Alienware does make laptops that are somewhat upgradable. However, they cost a fortune and from what I have seen here, not real dependable either.

Here is the one you want. Upgradable video card, memory and processor! Comes with dual core, a 7600 actual 256 meg card, gig of ram and 17 inch screen.

Newegg only has the recert now for some reason but on sale for 699. It had a 5 star review and known to be the best gamer under 2k.

Too bad I can't buy that laptop anywhere in the UK. Seriously that's be a nice laptop for that price but I cannot find it anywhere.

And newegg and most other US retailers are complete b---tards for not shipping internationally even though they're not the ones who have to pay for shipping...

You know I'd get a macbook pro if anything now, despite the fact they're a f---ing ripoff, but now I learn even though the macbook pro's have a dedicated graphics card, the Intel processor cannot be upgraded, it is soldered in place!

ARG!

I even been looking at these barebones type laptop things but mostly that sort of stuff is US only and anything that does exist over this side of the pond is really really expensive and even then I couldn't find any where the graphics card wasn't soldered.

I think, I'll give up like I said. I only wanted upgrade paths simply to ensure I didn't need to buy another one down too soon the road but it looks as though this really isn't an issue I should be worrying about simply because as said, laptops just aren't standardised kit. I didn't intent to play games on it or anything, mostly all I wanted it for was internet usage and writing a book but I'm the kind of guy who wants everything and I hate it when I buy some equipment that winds up so restrictive it just doesn't have enough power to do one particular thing in the future and because of the restrictions I can't upgrade it.

I am sure Newegg.com would love to expand their market. I believe there are all kinds of issues that they would need to deal with what would raise overhead costs. In the UK don't you have VAT taxes? Trade agreements that could come into play. Importation of electronics with worries of terrorist tampering. All kinds of things come into play.

That's a job for customs, not newegg. ALl newegg has to do is charge me for international fedex or something similar with good insurance, and then send it. After that if customs stop the product and request vat, or other crap then I'll pay for it, I don't care.

Either way newegg has no reason not to ship internationally, they're just being dicks.

Already have months ago. Got a generic response back along the lines of;

"We do not have any plans to ship our products internationally at this time."

I'm pissed off even more now because I made a topic in the 2k3 forum earlier requesting something urgently to make a boot disc of 2k3 and some cunt deleted it for no fucking reason, which means now I'm completely fucked because I had intended to come here right now and see some responses hopefully with a solution so I could quickly slipstream 2k3 and be all up and running.

But no. I'm now going to possibly lose my job because some stuck up prick on this forum thinks its funny to delete posts randomly without even informing the person who made it why.

Here is a link to an excellent site on slipstreaming Win2k. I think it applies.

Hurry and get it before the one and only moderator of this site removes this thread for the language you are using. No need for it.
