I want to do a test.

Need someone with compact flash card, USB 2.0 and a USB compact flash reader.

I just run a test and I can run games off my smart media card if I install them onto the smart media card, running on my USB reader.

Problem is, I want to get a 512 meg compact flash card, and see if that works instead.

And I read just now, that USB 2.0 nas a throughput of 50 meg a second and USB 1 has only 1 meg a second!. Dependant on how fast the memory works, that will mean I could theoretically buy 512 meg of compact flash memory, and format it and use it as a 512 meg video capture drive!

Anyone out there up for it? I don't know what formatting your compact flash will do. I read that some smart media doesn't like to be formatted, but mine has been fine.

Need someone with technical knowledge of their equpiment, not someone who doesn't know either!

Hi'ya,

Why don't you just make a bootable CD disk and switch your bios options to boot the CD first, anytime that you want to do that?

I haven't tried it myself, but wouldn't that be easier if it worked, since you wouldn't have to worry about USB1, or USB2 compatibility, and since that CDR could be used on any machine that allows bootable CDs on their mobo?

I'd imagine that you could load whatever software you wanted onto a bootable CD, including a bootable OS, or boot files, and then use the software that was installed on the CD itself, when the CD boots? No?

Hey Intel, AMD rulez!

Well, I agree.

But I am one of those guys that likes to play with stupid techie toys, and I thought HOW cool would it be to have a Windows O/S on a flash memory card, running at 50 meg a second!

I got some CARAZYYYY ideas!

I don't think you can boot a PC from a flash memory card, and Windows was never designed to run from a removeable device of any kind, so I doubt it will work. No harm in playing around with it though, you never know.

Yeah. I don't think the WIndows option will work. No BOOT sector.

But, for the sheer possible speed, I was wondering if anyone got any specs on write speeds for these thingys/ I couldn't find any on the web.

Here are some specs for the trek thumbdrive.

http://www.thumbdrive.com/

USB 1.1
read 500-700 KB/s
write 250-350 KB/s

Not as fast as a hard drive.

CF cards are seen as IDE devices if ya use the proper adapter. DOS and Linux will run from them, but Windoze needs to write to the disk unless ya build something like:

http://www.heise.de/ct/english/99/11/206/

and put it on the CF card.
I just ordered:

http://www.mydigitaldiscount.com/display_product.cfm?product_id=21

to use with FreeSCO on a CF card.

Thanks for the cool links guys. Yep. What is once science fiction, more often than not becomes science fact!

The pen thing is cool, and if it writes at those speeds, that is solely because USB 1 is only up to 1 meg a second. USB 2.0 is 40 meg a second+. So, if someone makes a pen drive sepcifically for USB 2.0, and whacks 1 gig of flash card memory, the limit of speed depends on the write speed of the memory? So what is the max speed this stuff works at?

I can seriously see this being held back, by all companies so they can concentrate on making more money out of serial drives, which are due to arrive soon.

BUT, if the market exists for a product, pretty soon the prodcut exists to meet the demand. And this can be done! SO... I am gonna go look into the write speeds of the various formats of ram, and see if I can get a reader that operates at full USB 2.0 speeds.

I would sooner pay $300 for a solid state 20 gig hard drive, than have to us RAID and worry about one of the drives failing making all data unrecoverable.

Plus, solid state hard drive sounds COOL!

Go and read THIS! Now tell me it isn't possible!

This technology means it can be done NOW and Windows will no doubt relase a full version of Windows O/S for solid stae, like Windows CE, but the XP or above full O/S sometime in the future!

How very very cool.

XxxFrancisxxxUSA, I know you meant to write 480mbps for USB II protocol and data rate. Only mentioned it for the people that don't know that much about USB devices. Not trying to be a smarta?? guy.
Later!
