I a wanted to know what your views are for the Antec TPQ 1000 watt power supply. I know it has 4 12 volt rails, but was wondering if it gave 1000 watt continious and if seems reliable.

Why do you feel you need anywhere near that much wattage?

It seems like the multiple rail concept presents it's own set of problems. care must be taken to balance the loads. Maybe there is some kind of advantage that I am not aware of.

My Dad sent me it and I was wondering about it since I only have a 480 max power supply now and I am going to have crossfire and overclock my cpu.

Well with the specs it has I'm pretty sure it will do the job. Just so expensive.

"I a wanted to know what your views are for the Antec TPQ 1000 watt power supply"

Definitely an expensive unit. Newegg has them for $200 after a $50 rebate.

What OtheHill said is correct. The problem with the multi-rail design is that there is no sharing between the rails. You'll have to plan your connections accordingly so that you don't overload one rail & have another go under-used. Here's a brief explanation:

http://www.pcpower.com/technology/m...

Many manufacturer's have gone back to a single +12v rail design with mega amperage...that way all devices have access to the same amperage "pool". As an example, check the specs of this 650W Corsair unit & notice this statement from the product descritpion: "52 Ampere +12V rail (and there's just the one +12V rail, so you don't have to balance your power needs by hand.)

"480 max power supply"

Post the specs.

the PSU I have in computer now is an Xfinity model #ult-xf600.
output as follows:
+5v=30a +3.3=25a +12v1=18a +12v220a -12v=.6a +5vsb=2.5a

watts:
+5v & +3.3v=160w, +112v1 & +12v2=420w. _12v & +5vsb=19.7w
peak= 600w

taken 20% away from the peak watts and I get 480 watts maximum continious is the correct way to figure it if I am right.

My dad thought I could use this new PSU since he picked it up dirt cheap.

I don't necessarily agree with that. But looking at the specs & knowing Ultra Products generally good reputation, the Xfinity is probably sufficient, depending on your hardware.

Define "dirt cheap".

Just make sure to wire things up properly so that you don't overlaod any one of the +12v rails. Spread things around....

After Speaking to Antec Support I have found out that the TPQ 1000 PSU actually supplies 70 amps and that all four of the +12v rails draws what they need from the 70 amps. example: if one rail needed 35 amps then it would get it and that would leave 35 amps for the other three rails that it has. so all four of the rails draw amps from the available amps in the main rail.

main rail 70 amps total

If rail 1 needs 35 amps it gets it, if rail 2 needs 10 amps it gets that, if rail 3 needs 5 amps it gets that and so on till the combined total of all the rails have used up the 70 amps on the mail rail.

Then they aren't really separate rails. Oh well, you should probably still attempt to balance the loads.
