Comment:

i just purchased a mobo supporting intel pentium 4 processors (P4S8X-X) under the beliefe that it was actually for amd processors :p (found out otherwise after reading the manual)

anyway i woudl like to know, will an amd processor work with this motherboard, or will i experience problems and possible end up with damaged hardware?

thx alot!!

Did you inform the person who served you that it was for an AMD? Ifso you are within your rights to return it.
I wouldn't be game to try the AMD/Intel combination.!

no i diddnt unfortunatly :(

thx for the advice, i wont try it :)

i may decide to buy a new cpu, as my 1.2ghz amd is a little out dated now.
i dont have much to spend however so dont think i can afford a intel pentium 4, as here, a Pentium 4 - 1.8Ghz cost 2x as much as a Intel Celeron 2.0Ghz.
would u reccomend the Intel Celeron 2.0Ghz as an ok buy? (is it much of an upgrade from the 1.2ghz amd?)

thx again !

The Intel P4 and AMD chips have completely different pin layouts.

The P4 motherboard you have will either be 423 or 478 pin format (probably the later).
AMD Athlon motherboards are 462 pin.

Therefore...an AMD CPU will never fit in an Intel board.

Sorry.

1.2 Ghz outdated? Not in my opinion. I assume it's an Athlon (not a Duron, considering you've had it for some time), which has 256k of L2 cache, and the Celeron 2.0 Ghz only has 128k. Therefore, this is a downgrade in at least one important area, as the L2 cache has a significant effect on overall CPU output. I can't recommend the Celeron, as I've always been disappointed in its performance. At this time, I don't see a reason for you to upgrade the processor, especially considering you have limited upgrade funds. Send back that Intel board. Use the money to get another 256 Meg of RAM. Have fun and good luck.

I'll drink to that C_Legend. Return the board and put the bucks in a coffee can and start saving for your new AMD rig if that's what you want. Prices going down daily.

haha ok :)

well the reason for purchasing a new mobo was because i was having many probs (HDs becomming inaccessible, modem not starting etc)
but when i purchased the intel mobo i also purchased a 256mg stick of ddr ram. i put the new ram stick in this current mobo and took the 2 sdram sticks out (mobo supports both) and it will now format my 2nd HD and access it (would not before)+ i havent had any probs with my modem since + my comps running a hell of alot faster :D, so i think i am gona be able to keep this mobo ^_^ (just needed new ram as one of the other sticks muct have been fauly)

i do still have 1 prob and thats that my comp keeps freezing :p (i think every time it has frozen i have been connected to the net so ill have to observe this problem more thoroughly and see what i can do about it :) )

as for the new intel mobo i think ill return (can get an 80% refund) it and get a new 256 stick of DDR ram like u said hehe ^_^

thx for all the help i have been given here!!
