I was in a computer store yesterday and they informed me that the AMD XP+ is no longer being made. Instead only the 64bit semprons and other 64 bit CPU's. Is this true? Or are they blowing smoke where it don't belong?
TIA

Might well be true. Checked with two of my main suppliers and all they are stocking is Athlon 64s and Semprons.
Did a search of Google and there are still some suppliers stocking Athlon XPs, but not many.

The socket A Sempron has replaced the AXP. Most are based on the TBred core...the only difference is they've been reclocked to run at 166MHz/333FSB & the PR ratings have been adjusted accordingly. The 3000+ is the only one based on the Barton core. There's always the XP-M if you have the right board for it, but there are still some AXPs available online.

YEP! you are about three months out-of-date, though shopping around you will still find 333/400fsb Sempron/Athlon XP+ CPU's.
266fsb Duron/Athlon XP+ are as rare as rocking horse dung! Though if you need 266fsb this UK eTailer has Duron 1800mhz:

Thanks all
I do know a site where I can get one.
Looks like my neice will be getting a better system thatn what I have for her graduation. I just don't understand why they would only sell the 64 bit when you can't even get a 64 bit OS yet (except for servers).

Newegg still has several socket A Semprons & XP-Ms...& a couple of AXPs too (2700+ & 2800+)

Linux Desktop O/S like Ubuntu also XP64 is fairly stable

There's Windows XP x64...but the driver support is horrible! I tried to talk my niece out of getting it on her new computer, but she insisted the salesman knew better. Now she can't use her printer, scanner, or digital camera because there are no 64-bit drivers available for them. She's talking about taking it back, having x64 removed & winXP (32-bit) installed

Hi Jam. I thought that if you run Windows XP 64-bit, your computer is also able to run 32-bit applications and 64-bit applications, right? If so then 32-bit drivers of printer, scanner, etc should work. Correct me if I am wrong
Thank you

Windows XP 64-bit needs 64-bit drivers. A lot of 64-bit drivers are included with Windows XP 64-bit. If the driver is not included and the manufacturer does not have it then you are out of luck.
With both Intel and AMD making 32/64-bit processors now you would think Microsoft would be pushing Windows 64-bit. Of course Windows 64-bit is just a modified version of Windows XP. Maybe they are holding out because they are so far behind with Windows Vista which is due to be released the end of next year. By that time they will probably tell us that all our computers are obsolete and we will need new ones to run Windows Vista.

So you mean that only drivers need to be 64-bit in order to work with Windows XP 64-bit, right? But for the 32-bit applications are still working fine on Windows XP 64-bit, right?
THank you
