Specs: Windows XP
I bought the AMD 9600 Quad core and need to update the bios for the chip to work. I downloaded the update by Asus to a thumb drive and am not sure how to proceed. Any help would be appreciated..

Will the computer start up and POST? If not, then there isn't much you can do except to install a compatible chip and then flash the BIOS.

If the board will post but the BIOS information is wrong then the instructions on how to flash should have been along side the file/s you did download.

Post your exact motherboard model here.

The ASUS site has complete instructions on how to flash the BIOS. Usually it's done by using a bootable floppy but there are other methods. Go back to the ASUS page where you download the BIOS file & look for a link titled something like "How to Update the BIOS". But as OtheHill pointed out, if you can't boot with the current CPU, you can't do the update.

BTW, why did you get a 9600? Those are the "broken" Phenoms...the ones with the "fix" all have 50 for the last two digits.
