But my friend keeps saying that AMDs are for gaming and that they are more stale. I wont be multi tasking just mainly gaming and updating my website. can you please help me out here!

Right now the price / performance points are almost identical. The pendulum swings and right now it is in the middle. Unless of course you ask someone their opinion in which case they will say that only an idiot would buy xxx, where xxx is either amd or intel. You will not go wrong with either unless you get suckered into buying the very fastest of either, which is where all the profit is.

Go with the P4's, if you got the money get the 3 gig one. P4's are very good cpu's for gaming because of its raw power and many features. Go with AMD if your short on cash lol because its dirt cheap except their new Barton 3000 cpu's I belive its almost the same price as Intel's P4 3.0 gig. Anyways its your money and your decision, buy what you think is best for your rig. Happy hunting :)

I agree with Johnoh. Given the specs, it's pretty much a flip of the coin. My preference is for AMD only because of the cost factor. In fact, you'll probably find a bigger difference in performance between graphics cards than you will with AMD or Intel cpu's.

Asking "AMD or Intel?" is a bit like saying "should I vote right wing or left wing?". You'll get all sorts of biased opinions.

Listen to Johnoh.

I had the same dilemma choosing between those two. I asked around, did some reading, and came up with pretty much the same types of answers these guy's have given you. And they are correct...pretty much boils down to user preference.

I too, do mainly gaming, first person games, shooter, Deus Ex for example....are the types I play. I built my own system, and ended up choosing this CPU...AMD Athlon XP 2700+. This was less than six months ago, and I have absolutely no complaints at all!!! However, I just recieved another desktop that is less than two months old, (left to me in a will) and it has a P4. I have been playing on both of them, and to tell you the truth...I can't see any difference. Good luck, have fun!!!

It's been a long time since AMD CPUs were generally thought to be inferior to Pentiums. They now both are of equal quality, and an AMD tends to be less expensive than a Pentium of equal performance. I've switched to AMD for the last two upgrades of both my and my wife's PCs, saving quite a few dollars. I have had absolutely no problems.

the answers you got are all true. basically, the simplest step in my opinion is, get an intel if you have the money, go with amd if short on cash. both has almost the same performance. AMD operates at higher temp, but is cheaper, intel is the other way around.

I would go with a P4. The other people have talked about performance, and they are right, but if you want to upgrade a year down the road a P4 running on a motherboard with a 533 front side bus will be easier to upgrade, since the aforementioned "barton" core AMD chip will run at a higher front side bus than current AMD chips. And as Lew said, the 3000+ costs about the same as the P4 3.06 right now. When you do upgrade this system, the P4 is not as delicate as the AMD chips, if you upgrade it yourself (as you should) you will have less of a chance of crushing the CPU core.

I think this "crushing the core" is just FUD. I remounted the heatsink on a Duron 850 numerous times, and I mounted the heatsink on my Athlon XP 2100+. I've never had any trouble, and I've never heard of anyone I know crushing a core from what I can remember. As long as you have some common sense, you won't crush the core. The big secret is only push as hard as you need to push to latch the heatsink clip. Like I said, common sense.

all this people gave a good point on each chip. but me personaly i would go with the amd system. like someone said they run hotter but the performance is great.
some people look at the FSB of the ships but remmember the P4 run on PUMP QUAD speeds which means more cycles to run p4(133*4)533. amd has less cycles and sends more data, the new AMD chips like barton run (166*2)333 less cycles more data. the P4 run faster so the make up for the lost cycles.

and hey, since your choosing which pc i would go with the alienware.
