gday,
Im putting together a new PC and i was wondering what i should go with: AMD or Intel?? Please, i would love any suggestions or comments. Thanks

Intel is the current faster of the two, but when you're playing around with 2ghz+, does it really matter?

Amd is really cheap but is fast go for amd athlon xp 2200++ and is very powerfull for gameing digital media and the internet knock
your self out with power of amd and celeron sucks way

Please, webmaster, can we just have ONE forum for the Intel AMD argument. Then people wouldn't have to keep asking and the rows would stop! I have NO doubt there will be some Pentium people in here putting down the Athlon soon.
I have an Athlon. I am buying a new Athlon. I am very happy. There ya go, nothing more to say really. Spend more on pentium, if you want. you will still be happy.
You won't notice any difference in your software speeds at 1.8 ghz. Fast is fast.
Just make sure you get 512 meg or more, and that you get an ATA133 7200 rpm hard drive, as those factors are as important as the processor speed. And make sure your motherboard accepts ATA133.
See ya!

Wait for the new Hammer from AMD to come out or that new one from Intel. LOL. If you wait for a motherboard that supports either of those 2 processors, then they should come with serial ATA 166 instead of parallel ATA 66/100/133.

depends on what you're going to do with your computer, how much you're willing to spend on extra things (like new heatsinks and fans), etc.
price: go amd
stability: go intelwith amd, you have to watch your heat temperature constantly (make sure you install more fans and stuff).
intel is more for business-level applications...servers, etc...where you want reliability. If something goes wrong, like if the computer starts to overheat, intels slow themselves down so you still can save the data and stuff, while amd's will freeze.
but when you go over 2.0 ghz, it probably doesn't matter that much...you won't be using any program intensive enough
i'm an intel person

why does everybody always say intel cost more i'm looking at cpu's on tiger direct.com and i see p4 2gig 512caches for $229 and amd 2200xp which is only 1900mhz.for$239 $10.00 more for 100mhz. less.I know I'm sick of the bickering over intel vs amd too,but I thought I'd bring this up.Also I have both and they both work just as good as the other, and thanks to this forum. Good luck on finding what you want. sianara seniaritas

They say that, because the 1800XP is almost a match for the 2.0 gig Pentium. OH MAN, not getting into this argument again.
And the 2200XP is more of a match, better even, than the 2.2gig pentium4 (400fsb of course, not newer 533 version).
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
I wonder if a more RELIABLE volvo is faster than a less reliable DRAG RACER? Drag racer gets hot too, while volvo has an INTERCOOLER.
But I can stick my whole family in the Volvo. But, I could get my whole family there quicker in the drag (albeit less comfortably). Swings and roundabouts. All I know, is my New Athlon 1800XP, after I have tweaked windows compltetly, will run faster than a Pentium4 2.0 gig machine with the same O/S and memory amount, and the ATHLON is only 1.53 ghz.
BUT. It's NOT just the processor. I capture video, and a system with a 6 gig processor still WOULD NOT do the job system with a 1 gig could no matter WHO made it, if I stuck a normal ATA100 hard drive in the 6 gig, but 2 ATA100's in a raid system in the 1 gig. The hard drive speed to me is absolutely critical, and it is part of performance of a PC.
Really, OH REALLY, AMD OR INTEL?? How about either, +RAID, + Geforce 4 Ti, + tweak Windows out to the max, including correcting the vcache values (and most people in the general public don't know what vcache is even!)
Please, oh please nobody start saying, p4 2.2 versus 1.8 gig Athlon is rubbish. (I know someone will just because I asked).
AMD have done a great job in getting their chips to run so productively, and yes, Intel chips are more reliable in servers. If I was wanting reliability in a server in my home, I would get a Pentium. But I don't need that, so I get an AMD, and spend the rest on BEER. And No one is surely gonna say money saved to spend on Beer is wrong! (wait for it...........)

Hey brock is that a 2.0ghz or a 2.0ghza. If it is the first then that is why it is so cheap. It is based on the first p4. The 2.0a is based on the northwood(i think that's the correct name) core which is the one that is beating AMD in a lot of it's tests. So the first one(2.0ghz) would be cheaper than the 2200XP+ because it is slower. But if it is a 2.0ghza could you tell me where to get it because if it is that cheap there they must have a lot of other cheaper items like video cards and etc.

boldgamer,I seen it here at: [tiger direct.com]and yes I believe it is the new 2ghz A ,based on 0.13 micron with 512caches but they are sold out at this time.Yes they have vid.cards cpu's mobo's etc.And to XxxFrancisxxxUSA YOUR the one thats trying to start a battle over the amd vs.intel controversy.I was only stating a fact that you can purchase intel or amd for about the same performance for the money.I am using 1 of my amd pc's as i type this.As i said before there both very good and i like them both equal to the original poster Borris just my six packs worth. sianara sinaritas

What controversy?
I didn't even know there was a row about this, until I found this site about a week ago!
There are far more important things going on in the world to worry about, like Iraq and a seemingly imminent full scale war!
I just give my advice, and let people decide if they wish to take.
Have a good day!

The hot, cheap, fast 1.8GHZ AMD XP CPU is $269
The more reliable, lower priced 1.8GHZ Intel P4 CPU is $149
Oh, sh-t. What has AMD done now. AMD is Greedy!!
Intel rules!
Cyrix cools!
AMD fools!
