Subject: AMD HT or AMD 64 Bit?OS: WinpXP ProCPU/Ram: AMD 1500+ (1.33) / 256 |
Comment: Hello, and thank you for your advice. I want to upgrade my pc, but after hours of reading up about things online, i've found myself running in circles. I want to put in a new mobo, and cpu. I will be using the pc for downloading (programs who suck cpu dry), some graphic design, general internet use, and I am always moving around big files. I was almost all set, and ready to buy a pentuim 4, when a question came up about that. If I do go with pentuim 4 is it worth it to throw in a few extra bucks, to get the HT technology? I am also considering getting an AMD 64 bit, because suposidly 64 bit is much better, but im not to sure about that. Also, what is a good way to determine what type of chipset for the mobo I should get?

Reply: (edit)Pentiums in general, even with "HT Tech." (which is bs, btw), suck. AMD chips are far superior to Intel's, even when running in 32bit mode. The 64bit AMD Athlons fully shine with Windows x64. But I dont wanna worry you with all that mumbo jumbo if your pc is just for general use. If you're only looking into upgrading the cpu and mobo, I suggest you get a motherboard with Socket 939, and for the cpu, get an AMD Athlon 64 3000+. If you have lots of money, go for better models of the A64... like the 3200+, 3500+, or the 4000+ if you're really rich! B33R, B33R B33R!!!!!!!!!

Reply: (edit)Just as general post on this issue.. I have been using intell since year dot... I also have been building both intell and amd rigs for some time now... Few months back I was placed in the same position, and upgrade but in which direction.. My ersonal opinion only and nothing more... AMD have the edge... And if you are brave enough, change your pro version for the new X64 verson of XP and never look back... This is the os we should have had when XP pro first hit the market... Reply: (edit)I looked at some amd 64 cpu's, and I was wondering.. right now i have 1.33 ghz, if i upgrade to 2.0 or 2.2 will it make that much of a difference? Also, what is the preformance difference between socket 754 amd 939? and, is there a "more reliable" or "faster" chip set for a board?

Reply: (edit)Not sure about the performance difference between 754 and 939, but 939 is the socket of the future. 754 is being left behind in the past, and socket 939 is being used on new nForce4 boards that support the new col stuff like PCI Express and DDR2! w00t! As for the more reliable chipset, yes, definitely nVidia nForce. VIA chipsets aint bad either. B33R, B33R B33R!!!!!!!!!

Reply: (edit)If you go by the tests 939 cpus run much cooler and seem to be ram more effiecent than the socket 754.. Just an example for you.. The new Intel cpu runs at a base rate of about 45+ C at idle, the new 64 Bit cpus from AMD run at 37 C at idle with a stock factory supplied cooler.....These temps I have compared from my rig to a similar spec intel rig. And going by the amount of posts we have had on this issues it seems quiet correct.. Intel has always had a greater heat spike range than the AMD, this has been the case for a lon time now.... The amd's heat spike can be from say 37 to 50 where the intell will spike from 45 to 65+ depending on usage of course AJ is correct it seems that the 939 socket is here to stay for some time.... As for the Chipset !! The Nvidia nforce4 or the NF4SLI seems to have the performance edge over the others at this time... In recent months Intel has in fact gone into pertnership with Nvidi to manufacture this chipset for the Intel based boards.. So they did !! And guess what !!! The thing outperfomed the intell 955x chipset with intels own processor, on a same psec board but only diff being the chipset itself.... I would say Nvidia well done,,, I think it would almost be worth buying some shares... Reply: (edit)"what is the preformance difference between socket 754 amd 939" You're comparing 2 different technologies. Socket 754 is the early platform for the Athlon64, but it wasn't long before socket 939 was introduced. One of the big differences is socket 939 supports dual channel mode, while socket 754 does not.
