Iv recently purchased a new pc off eBay which was advertised as 3.2 ghz processor (amd athlon "barton" 3200).
after receiving, i look in 'my computer' and it states that the processor is only 2.2 ghz?! after phoning the guy who sold it, he said that the cpu runs at 3.2 ghz... is he lying..i should be able to return because of false advertising right? or is he right?would i have been better off buying a pentium processor?

You didn't get ripped off, but the dude you bought it from obviously doesn't know what he's talking about...& you obviously didn't do your homework.

All AMD Athlon XP & Athlon 64 CPUs are "performance rated". The model number you see is not the speed the CPU actually runs at. The Barton 3200+ runs at 2200MHz & is clocked at 11 x 200MHz (400FSB).

Here ya go...straight from the AMD website:

Asus A7N8X-X
1800+ @ 8 x 210MHz

Asus Ti4800SE 128MB

Definatley a question of choice there ron

i kept the extra 100quid it wouldve cost for the p4 and got a better graphics card. AMD for me ta!. 52k aquamark far better for my budget.
choices choices red pill or blue pill.
to raju , cheer up m8 now you realise performance rating AMD uses is different to Intel & doesnt mean you were misled , theres very little in it, currently the barton is a good all rounder cpu, and ill bet your mobo will take a sempron if you wish to use xp64bit edition when it arrives, nice choice.

Well, you bought off E-Bay, so them's the chances youse takes. Be glad you got a unit and excellent chip that works-others have fared much worse with no recourse. Home-build is still the best.

I am of the same opinion as ranchhand concerning Ebay. I am curious, did you compare the price of that CPU to what you could have bought from a retail or Estore? If so did you save much cash? I ask because I am amazed by the trust some folks have when buying from Ebay. If the CPU was a working CPU why would this seller dispose of it? Is it stolen, damaged, etc.? Don't take offence, I am trying to figure out if I am missing out on something here.

Thanks a lot guys.
i did try and do some research before buying.. but i was going on the assumption that i was buying a 3.2ghz cpu...in which case i thought i got a good deal. i paid £660 in total. here is the spec i got , did i get a good deal or should a return the lot and claim false advertising?
17" TFT MONITOR
AMD XP3200+ CPU
AsRock K7UPG MotherBoard
1gig DDR400 RAM
160GB IDE HDD 72000rpm 8mb cache
16x IDE 3520 DUAL LAYER DVD/RW+-
6 Channel ONBOARD SOUND AC97
256mb ATI RADEON 9550
3.5" FLOPPY DISK DRIVE
100/10 Ethernet Network Card (BB Ready)
6 USB Ports
Keyboard, Mouse & Speakers
ATX Case 450watt PSU 6Bay

AS for the buying off eBay...it was cheaper than in the shops. the guy has a bricks n mortar company too, which is why i was trusting. i phoned them up and checked bfore buying. when paying through payapl you also have buyer protection so you dont get conned.

The old addage of Caviat Emptor applies here. You owe it to yourself to do some research on a product before you buy. If this guy actually thought this processor is a 3.2GHz processor then I would be leery of his ability to assemble a complete system that is dependable. What will you do for tech support? What about an OS? You get what you pay for. I am in the USA so I can't speak to the amount you paid but I personally would buy from reputable dealers with some kind of track record.

Hi again
as its an all in one solution its fine the radeon is lower mid range for some games but hey the 17"tft swings it at that price check out the ms rating 25 or 16, 12?.
& plenty of ram included.
Asrock used to be bye-word for 'cheap' asus in disguise. The brand name has improved with each version released.
nice blue colour mobo, and does it have a bridging board for the amd 754?.
(it Should do)nice upgrade path for later.

If you had self built you could have possibly saved only the difference in £-vat assuming you know where to buy from.

& u have to be confident in your abilities to build.

novatech.co.uk "matrix" range is comparable in price & spec.
so its ok on price

ps i build regularily so know the score there.
was it from manchester? nd..?
a self build at that price i would expect a 3200amd 63 may be geforce 5950 / tops 512 ram
its swings n roundabouts.

(hey you did the right thing about bricks n morter business btw:) smart thinking.
basically does it do what you want? yes?? then forget worrying.

re:oth, & just out of interest;
if its stolen what can you do anyway??
ebay dont care.
jok-ebay .co.uk was described by a judge in the UK as thieves paradise, i dont use it, its there just for laughs.
amazing the company still runs !!

tft has 16ms rating. any good?
not sure bout the bridging board, heres what the desc. of the board is:

"Support AMD® Duron/ Athlon/ Athlon XP/ Sempron Socket 462 Processors @
266/333/400MHz F.S.B
• 4 x 184 pins DDR Slot, (DDR 266/333/400) Max 4GB *** Dual Channel! ***
• 1 x AGP 8X/4X 1.5Volt
ATA 133 supported. 2 x Serial ATA Connectors, 1.5Gb/s RAID 0,1, JBOD, SATA
HDD HotPlug
• 5.1 Channel audio.
• *** Dual Channel! ***
The 128-Bit Twin bank DDR memory architecture doubles the DDR 400(PC3200)
bandwidth. System bottlenecks are eliminated with balanced architecture
and peak bandwidths up to 6.4GB/s."

if that is any help?
im not an expert on building so i prob wouldv wasted £ on building it myself (cost of blowing up, replacing etc)
it does do what i want so i gues il just keep it.

company is based in huddersfield.

re: othehil
the company provides 3 yr warranty. 1 yr parts and 2yr labour (RTB) which aint bad..lets hope they stay in business.

oh.. another thing.u may laugh at me... when i recieved the machine, i wanted to have a look at the processor to check if it ws the right one (later to discover it says v. little on it!) and i placed the fan on my table... some of the silver conductive stuff came off.. should i be worried? iv read that the cpu has an automatic shut off if it gets too hot, but should i get it topped up?

and about eBay..u gota b careful with stuff...loads of fake gear going around. its best to analyse the description and ask loads of questions if buying something expensive. it is a bit of a joke tho.. iv seen sellers that hav sold thousands of blatently s---e or fake goods/'business opportunities'. amazing how many gullible people there are out there.
