I'm thinking of upgrading to an Athlon 64 and was wondering about the differences between the different socket sets, 754 and 939? Is one better than the other? Are there better motherboards available for one? Will both continue or will one be dropped? etc etc
Any help or advice would be very much appreciated :)

Seriously, you should go with the 940 socket series athlon 64's. they have much more potential than others. The FX series of processors are much more powerful...check it out...

Socket 754 has been abandoned for the Athlon64 already. There are a few Athlon 64 socket 754, but AMD has shifted to socket 939. The socket 754 model doesn't support dual channel RAM, socket 939 does. There won't be any more Athlon64/skt754 CPUs made other than what's available today. There will be Sempron/skt754 CPUs however...they will be based on the Athlon 64 but will only be 32-bit versions & only have 256k L2 cache.
If you're gonna go with an A64 setup, go with socket 939
