hey peeps
I was just wondering if this is alright for AMDs
I gota old SONY CRX175A1 CD-writer (2MB buffer) (24x/10x/40x) -- whenever i burn CDs at 24x (never tried anything below that speed), my mouse goes all jerky and it kinda lags
I got 2x256MB DDR RAM @ 333Mhz on BIOSTAR M7NCG-400 mobo with an AMD 2600+ BARTON CORE
A friend has got a AMD 1800+ and even THAT lags when burning CDs
Another friend, hez gota 2400+ -- but his CD writer lags when its READING CDs, not while writing CDs
(all of the 3 PCs have OLD CD WRITERS)
Could anyone confirm the problem here ? :)

Well AMD Athlons aren't known for their quick completion times in burning and encoding like Intels are. Where AMD Athlons shine is in graphics and gaming. I suspect it's your old CD-RW though, because You shouldn't be having the problems like you are having with that fast of processor.
When I upgraded to a faster CD-RW from a 16x to a 48x a year ago I instantly noticed a preformance increase even when I burnt things at 16x on my new CD-RW.
Try upgrading to a newer burning software if you haven't already, because newer burning software can help speed as well due to newer burning software. I also noticed when i jumped from nero 5.5 to nero 6 I saw a bit of an inprovment in burning time as well.
Try closing programs that you aren't using at that time when burning, because that will help free up the ram.
it can be 3 things your CD-RW, outdated burning software or too many programs running at once when you are burning. Try updating the software and clsoing all of the programs that you aren't using while burning and if that doesn't work get a newer CD-RW.
I highly doubt it's the AMD Athlon you have that is causing your pc to lag the badly when you are burning something.

I already have NERO 6.3.1.6 installed
I burn @ 24X (max spd of writer)even Im suspecting a writer problem
Will try to get my hands on a friend's CDRW and chk it there.I also read on Computing.net that AMDs are not meant for BURNING/ENCODING -- but WTF .. it STILL RULZ :D
Thanx man

Well they can burn and encode, they just can't do it nearly as fast as intels in most areas because of the smaller cache size on AMD chips.
Now the AMD 64's that have 1mb of cache do a pretty good job at hanging in their with Intel Pentium 4 1mb of cahce but the slower clock speed on the AMD's is why AMD lose in encoding and burning vs Intel, because encoding and burning needs 2 things cache size and mhz. Even though AMD rates their prcoessors to preform as well at the same mhz speed as p4's but do it at a lower clock speed, it some times doesn't work out that way.

If you are using Nero as stated there should be a box posting the burning speed. Is the burner burning at near the set speed? If so, where is this lag.
You sound like you expected your friend's PC to run faster than yours. His IS a slower processor. I think you are asking too much of your computer. "my mouse goes all jerky and it kinda lags". This statement indicates that you are trying to perform other functions while burning. If the other functions require many CPU cycles what do you expect. Have you looked at how your hardware is even set up. To blame the AMD CPU is premature. How are the drives set up, IRQ assignment, Etc. All these things will have an impact on how your computer performs. The age of the burner COULD have an impact, as you questioned. Do the disks you burned at 24x work correctly?

CD Burning is a procesor intensive operation, people who expect high performance in an operation like burning are like people who say a race engine isn't performing well enough when they are always at full throttle from first gear.
Definitely back off using other programs when burning,it's no surprise to me that the mouse is herky jerky, leave the mouse alone and close all other programs, hardware interrupt requests occurr even when moving the mouse.

i had the same problem. i have a p4. and win 2k just like u. all i had to do was change the drive to dma. it lagged when i was ripping cds too.
p4 at 3330mhz
256mb pc3200
80gb wd hdd
geforce 4 mx440 teporary
Audigy 2 ZS
dvd and cd burner
only 15 so i am tight on cash

WOW... lodza replies
OK, I usually burn my CDs at da max spd (24x) -- thats what NERo shows me as the MAX burn speed
They DO work properly -- no issues
OK, I also do not use any other heavy apps -- usually just MSN and Firefox MINIMIZED (NOT USING THEM AT ALL)
yes, i DO agree with the CACHE -- I gota 512KB cache .. compared to a 1MB in da pentiums -- not a worry
I just wanted to CONFIRM if this is what the regular AMD users are facing ... coz I used to work with a CELERON 400MHZ before I got this new PC :)

Here is the thing with the programs. You may not notice it but a lot of programs could be running in the background and you may not even realize it. go to start/run/msconfig. then go to the start up tab and in there you will see a list of programs. Uncheck basicly all of them except for a fire wall, antivirus, systray loadpowerprofile. If you don't know where they are exactly look at thr right hand side of the page and it will tell you wht each thing checked is. The fact of the matter is you don't need that majority of those programs running all the time, they take up resources because they are sitting their waiting to be used in a standby state, it's suppose to help load times of the program boot faster but to be hones I can't tell the diff on my pc, so instead of they running in the background waiting to be ran I just manually open them that way they can be ran when I want then to be ran.
