Hi People,

I am building a new computer, goinng to put everything together now. However, there is something concern about the mainboard.(Intel D915PCY)http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/cy/
It is a PCIe board.

There is a female 4 pin connector on the mainboard (look like the 12V for hard drive),
the mannual says it is "Alternate Power Connector".

I am not sure if i should plug a 12V connector in there or not as the mannual say nothing about it. So i hope i can get a quick respond from here.

Thanks guys!

Yes! you should plug a line from the PSU in there! it should look something like this :

____
|OO|

----

But not like the ones that have to go to your Hardrives and optical drives.

Let me know if you need more help.

Zee.

Is it the 4-pin connector on the m/b (near the PSU) that looks like Zee's diagram? If so, you will need to plug the power connector into it. Your PC may not even boot up if you don't.

Looking @ the blown up photo of your D915PCY board, it was interesting to see that you have molex (1x4 Alternate power) connector on top the additional (2x2 ATX12V power) connector, I thought may be all the auxillary power is to beef up your main connector but come to find out, you also have a (2x12 24-pin main power) connector.

According to your manual, even if you have an ATX 2.0 compliant PSU w/ 24-pin main power connector, your 2x2 ATX12V power MUST be plugged in for the board to boot, but if you're using a PSU with a (2x10 20-pin main power) connector, you connect the cable on the rightmost pins of the main power connector, leaving pins 11, 12, 23, and 24 unconnected.

Regarding the (1x4 Alternate power) connector, it provides additional power when using high wattage PCI Express x16 graphics cards. It further states that when using high wattage PCI Express x16 graphics cards, use one of the following power supply configurations to avoid system instability:

The preferred method of power delivery is to use a power supply with a 2x12 main power cable. In this configuration, use two connectors to provide power to the board:
 The main power connector
 The ATX12V connector

In this configuration, the alternate power connector is not required. The 2x12 main power cable can provide up to 144 W of power from the +12 V rail.

If power delivery method is to use a power supply has a 2x10 main power cable. In this configuration, use three connectors to provide power to the board:
 The main power connector
 The ATX12V connector
 The alternate power connector..

thanks for the reply. I have successfully installed the computer. It is running great hehe.

I tried to boot up with and without the plugging the 4 pins cord. Both times booted normally. So i guess the alternative power is for extra power. I am gonna test a game on this machine.

3.4Ghz Prescott
x700 Pro Sapphire Radeon
Croisair DDR2 533 (4-4-4 time, gonna get 3-3-3 soon and return the 4-4-4)
