This is a 6000 series notebook that I'm upgrading from 1GB to 2GB and was wondering if it's possible to allocate more memory to the Intel on board graphics? Sorry I don't have more accurate specs but is this something you can usually do on most notebooks with on board video?

Some laptops have dedicated video memory, some share system memory. According to the spec sheets for the Gateway 6000 series, you can allocate up to 64MB toward the video. That's it.

You're not gonna be able to play games with it if that's what you're hoping. The Intel 855GME (Extreme Graphics) chip is one of the worst there is. It has no support for shaders & the core only runs at 133MHz. Out of 109 mobile graphics chips tested, it ranks 105th:

It's nice to hear we're not dead last! lol.

I'm not really asking for a games purpose, I'm more interested with getting the best performance out of the machine for general use. With that said do you think it's even worth trying to do or will just adding the extra 1GB of memory suffice?

I'm not a Vista fan. Other than testing RC1 & RC2, I haven't worked with it, but I know it's a memory hog.

I had another look at the spec sheet I posted in my other response & it says 1GB is the max your system can handle. Looks like you're out of luck.

I'm pretty sure that I saw in the manual specs it supports up to 2GB of memory, at least I hope it does cuz I already ordered it.

Not a fan of Vista myself, especially seeing as basic is really just XP with all of the memory sucking requirement and none of the bells n whistles. I would've wiped the HD and loaded XP but wasn't confident that I could've found XP drivers for all the hardware.

What's your opinion on that?

I just checked Crucial.com. It shows that your laptop uses 200-pin SODIMM DDR333 (PC2700) & confirms what the link above shows...2 DIMM slots, max of 512MB per slot, max total of 1GB.

As for going back to XP, some people are successful finding drivers, some people are not...it all depends on the hardware. Being that your system is based on the older Intel 855GME & uses DDR rather than DDR2, my guess is you'd have no problem. If you're considering it, see if you can find the drivers 1st.
