|Hard drive could be failing, or the file system has become corrupt and unreadable, though the hd is usually still picked up in disk mgmt. I would probably try recovering the drive first. Is it under warranty? If not sometimes it is necessary to remove the hard drive from the external case and hook it up directly to a sata connection(in case sata~usb board is toast). Two free recovery programs are Pc Files Inspector and Recuva. If you cannot retrieve the data, then I would test the drive with seatools or the hard manufacturers diagnostic, doing a short generic test, and then a long generic test if it passed the short. If the hard drive is not detected by recovery software or disk mgmt, you may have a fried hd board. Links below.|
