VGA cards are an old design. Slow, etc. Everything done by the system processor.

PCI bus VGA or Graphics Accelerator cards are much faster, have their own processor and memory, so most of the video rendering can be done in overlap with what the main system processor is doing. But PCI video cards are limited by the speed of the PCI bus which they plug into.

AGP cards plug into a special AGP socket on the system board, have their own processor and memory, but connect directly to the processor/memory front side bus. This makes them much faster, and allows them direct access to memory at fast speeds when running games.

For todays software and games, consider nothing but AGP if your system board has an AGP socket. Only buy a system board that has an AGP socket. There is only a small cost difference between AGP and PCI-only cards, but well worth the performance difference.

The AGP card is the VGA card, PCI is also a VGA card, they are just called different names, like display adapter, VGA card or Graphics accelerator card

Hope this helps

Perhaps someone else can explain better :)

Hehe. If you were all my kids, I will slap you all. :-).
"What's the difference between a round table and a brown soft chair? Which one is better? " Doesn't make sense, huh?

OK, to clarify your confused question, VGA and AGP are related but they don't fall under the same category. ISA, EISA, VLB, PCI, AGP, (and more from IBM), etc, etc.. are buses. These are Video System Interfaces. (The video system interface is the method by which the video coprocessor and video memory are connected to the rest of the computer)
On the other hand, Monochrome Display Adapter (MDA), Hercules Graphics Card, Color Graphics Adapter (CGA),
Enhanced Graphics Adapter (EGA), Video Graphics Adapter (VGA), Super VGA (SVGA), XGA, etc, etc.. are video display standard. The reason behind these video standard is to establish standards, of course for resolutions, colors, refresh modes, etc., to make it easier for the manufacturers of PCs, monitors, and software to ensure that their products work together. The monitors and the cards has to be of the same standard too. For example, EGA monitor requieres EGA card.

So, what's better between a VGA and an AGP?, well, if anybody can tell me which one is better between a floppy drive and a modem, then I will try to give it a shot. They are not the same and cannot be compared.
