w/ Asus K8V Deluxe mobo w/ latest bios, Radeon 9800 pro 128MB w/ latest catalyst drivers, and it refuses to turn on AGP. I set it in the bios to be at 8x and everything and tell the catalyst to run at 8x, tells me it needs to reboot, it reboots and starts up, only to be running with AGP still off. WHY? HELP ME PLEASE. I'M DESPERATE.

no. could it be that it is actually running at 8x and just not telling me? it runs really nicely most of the time, but sometimes when i'm playing certain half-life mods it jerks around when stuff happens, (ie. grenades exploding, me getting shot in the head, etc.) It played doom 3 quite well actually, so i'm skeptical if AGP is really off or not. I ran doom3 just about as well as my friend who has a radeon 9600 all-in-wonder 128MB... it just seems weird that if it really is on that it would tell me it's off, and that if it's off i would be able to play just as well as when if it were on...

Your post is misleading...if the AGP didn't work you wouldn't be getting any video display at all. I think you're trying to say your AGP is running at 8X...I assume it's running at 4X then?

Download the following (CPUZ v1.23)...click on the mainboard tab, then look at the bottom where it says AGP...what does it say for "data transfer rate"?

Where is this AGP section of CPU-Z... I can't seem to find it anywhere... the real problem is that it won't turn to 8x or 4x or anythingx at all. it won't change from "off". what is the percieved benefit from running at AGP 8x as opposed to having AGP off (0x)?

I'm still confused as to what you're asking...if your AGP was turned off, you would have no video display! There would be NOTHING on your screen...it would be blank! If that's not the case, then your AGP is working. I believe your question should be about AGP speed...is it running at 2x, 4x, or 8x?

I told you what to do to find out...download CPUZ v1.23 from the link I provided. Unzip it & double click on CPUZ.exe...when it pops up:

"click on the mainboard tab, then look at the bottom where it says AGP...what does it say for "data transfer rate"?"

You may need to install (or reinstall) your motherboard chipset drivers

zach- i had the same problem. I had just installed a new Gecube 9800 pro and re-installed Windows at the same time. Couldn't figure out why the ATI config utility showed AGP as off (and stayed off when changed and re-booted) and the FastWite setting greyed out, even though I had 8X AGP/FastWrite set on in the BIOS.

Then the light bulb turned on- I hadn't installed the Motherboard drivers off the MB CD (Via 4-in-1 in my case). Installed them- bingo, 8X AGP and Fastwrite working and confirmed on in the utility.
