Comment:

I have a basic question about determining what speed my AGP slot is running at. I have a radeon 9600 in my AGP slot now, but am thinking of upgrading. How do I determine what speed (4x, 8x)my motherboard allows the AGP slot to operate at? I would like to upgrade to a 8x AGP card but do not know if my motherboard will allow this. Thank you for your help.

Knowing the model of your MOBO might help.

Knowing the model of your motherboard will certainly help. The 9600 will do 8x but only on an 8x capable motherboard.

OK, I guess my question is ,"how do I check to see if my motherboard is 8x capable?". I bought my computer a few years back and do not know what model it is or have any documentation on it. I did not know if there was away in like DEVICE MANAGER or SYSTEM that I could find this out. I am not familiar with Everest, is this a software program that will diagnost my mother board? thanks again.

Instead of downloading everest, you can try this first.

1)Right click you desktop and select properties.

2)Click the settings tab then click advanced.

3) Click the SMARTGART(tm) tab and see what your motherboard and video card are currently set to. If 8x is greyed out and you're currently set to 4x, you have a 4x motherboard.

Thanks Frosty, I checked SMARTGART, it shows set up speed at 1x to 4x with the toggle at 4x, and under current AGP speed, it shows 4x, with no 8x greyed out. I assume that this means my motherboard has capabilities only for 4x, and if I want 8x, I need to buy another computer, is this correct?

If you mobo is 4x capable don't worry about 8X. Ther is very little if any difference 99.9% of the time between 4-8x.
