I just want to know if I can use the ati radeon 9600XT 256M DDR instead of my onboard graphics card. Don't know a lot about this but a mate will send me the card for free so hopefully it's right (don't know if I have agp or pci so that's my main question). What I'm hoping this will do is enable my computer to run my new Lacie 24" CRT monitor better (the way I understand it is that my current onboard graphics card won't allow me to do higher resolution than 1024x768 at 75Hz)
I've posted as much as I thought might be relevant below from the report generated by Everest about my machine. Let me know if y'all need more info to help me out. Thanks in advance!!

What you're going to have to do is uninstall the drivers for the SiS graphics, then shutdown the system. Unplug the power cord, install the 9600XT, connect the monitor to the new card, reconnect the power cord, boot up & immediately entire the BIOS. Look for settings related to the graphics. Disable the onboard graphics...there may be a shared memory setting, currently it's at 128MB...set it to zero (or none). Check the initial display setting, change it to AGP. It appears that the AGP Aperture is already set to 128MB so you're good there. Once you've changed the settings, save & exit. Boot into Windows & install the latest available ATI drivers. If you're running Windows 2000, use these:
http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/...
I suggest you download & install the "display driver" rather than the "Catalyst Suite"

so are you saying that I have an agp slot for it, and that's the type of card this radeon is?
I can open my machine to look if someone tells me what to look for, but I thought it might already be in the info I'd posted...
in any event, thanks for the step-by-step, have copied it and as soon as I know the card will fit I'll ask my friend to send it over.

The Radeon 9600XT wasn't available as a PCI card, it was strictly AGP.
If you wanna open the case & check, the AGP slot should be the uppermost slot...it's shorter & set back farther than the PCI slots. It's usually brown but the color *may* vary depending on the board manufacturer. Here's a pic:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikiped...
EDIT: I just reread your original message. I didn't see the make/model of the board the 1st time. You have an Asus K8S-MX which definitely has an AGP slot. Here's a direct link to your board at the Asus site. If you don't have a copy of the manual, you may wanna download it for future reference:

Have your friend send the card...it'll fit.
Tip:
Follow jam's installation advice to the letter; especially
"I suggest you download & install the "display driver" rather than the "Catalyst Suite""
It's a good old card...enjoy
Skip

I just took a quick look at the BIOS section of the manual. To disable the onboard video, go to Advanced -> Chipset Settings -> AGP Configuration & change these settings to:
Aperture Size = 128MB
Graphics Adapter Priority = AGP/PCI
AGP Fast Writes = Disabled
Select AGP 3.0 Data Ratio = 8X
Share Memory = Disabled

LOL jam...just saved me from reading the manual.
Again, follow jam's advice; especially
"AGP Fast Writes = Disabled"
"Share Memory = Disabled"Skip

oh my gawd you guys are fab. thanks for all the help. The card is on its way and I'm hoping this will solve my problem. what do you think?
just got a LaCie monitor (24" CRT, 22" flat viewing area) so went from 16" to that. fabulous. but the text is blurry. have fiddled with all monitor settings, the closest thing that seems to want to work is the moire setting, it seems like it would sharpen everything up if I could go into negative numbers (i.e. it stops at 0.0).The blurry text is similar to what I get at low refresh rates. have already also tried all resolutions and refresh rate is supposedly set to 85. However, after loading the SiS utilities drivers when I try to increase resolution the screen grows bigger than my desktop (e.g. not all of my desktop show, the whole image moves when I move the cursor towards the sides of the screen), and it really is the same resolution anyway, just "bigger".
In any event, I imagine a better card will have its own separate settings, won't force me to stay at 1024x768 and 75Hz which is all I can seem to do now.
Hope I haven't bored you all by now. Oh, and I have to add that I believe the guy who sold me the monitor is honest, so I don't think the monitor's dying (although that is a possibility).
so thanks again to all!!! I will follow the instructions to the letter and get back to you.
