My mobo has an AGP 4x slot and 2 free PCI slots. Here are three options I thought of, which is best?
1) Purchase a 64 Meg 4x AGP card and run it in the 4x slot. 2) Purchase a 128 Meg 8x AGP card and run it in the 4x slot. 3) Purchase a 128 Meg PCI card and bypass AGP completely.

option 2
buy the 128 MB AGP 8X card, it will only run at 4x but you'll have the option later if you upgrade your mobo to one that supports 8x. Either way, get an AGP card over a PCI.

I concur with Phil 100%. If money is an issue, go with option 1. An nVidia GeForce2 Ultra would be an excellent choice. If you go with option 2, look for an ATI card (9600 pro)as nVidia has issues with it's current line of cards.

Summary: From what I've heard the improvement from AGP 4X to 8X is pretty small. I think most people would say to switch to PCI-E or PCI-X if you are going to change motherboards. Do yourself a favor BACKUP!...
