Hi
I would like to know if I can use an AGP 4X video card on a AGP 2x slot. ... and what's the difference between the 4x and 2x if two video cards have the same memory??

You can, but it will only operate at 2x.

Someone else will surely chime in with more specifics, but the #x has to do with data transfer I think, the more (8x) the better essentially.

Just about all AGP 4x cards are compatible with AGP 2x, but the transfer rate will be halved, this is not so with AGP 4x to 8x. The spped transfer isn't doubled when going from 4 to 8.

Andrew is right. There will only be a slight increase in performance and quality, but the speed will not be doubled.

To answer your question,
4x=66MHz
2x=33Mhz, same as PCI frequency.

Be careful!!!

Check your manual for the MOBO. The original AGP slots were 3.3 Volts, and the later 4x cards worked off 1.5 Volts. If you have a 3.3 Volt AGP 1.0 slot, you probably won't be able to fit the 4x card as the slot and connector are different. Check which type of AGP slot you have. You can damage the card in the wrong slot/voltage.

"To answer your question,

That statement is absolutely WRONG!

The 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x refers to data transfer rates (bandwidth) in megabytes per sec (mb/s)

AGP (1x): 66MHz clock, 8 bytes/clock, Bandwidth: 266MB/s [3.3V or 1.5V signal swing]
AGP 2x: 133MHz clock, 8 bytes/clock, Bandwidth: 533MB/s [3.3V or 1.5V signal swing]
AGP 4x: 266MHz clock, 16 bytes/clock, Bandwidth: 1066MB/s [1.5V signal swing]
AGP 8x: 533MHz clock, 32 bytes/clock, Bandwidth: 2.1GB/s [0.8V signal swing]
