I have the subject modem installed . I had to reinstall XP because the system was getting buggy, The modem worked fine prior to re installation . Now I get the error of Not initialized (3). I'm not sure what that means. I did the Help trouble shooting but did not arrive at a solution. The driver does not require updating.
Anybody got any further ideas?

Open Device Manager, Locate the Modem Section. Click the "+" in front of MODEMS. Right click the installed Modem, select Remove. OK your way out of DM and Reboot.

Windows will re-detect the Modem and install the appropriate Drivers.

May be some help at this link.

I am wheelchair bound so am unable to get to the modem in the computer.
I have already removed at the device mgr and then rebooted. Never found. Had to reinstall manually.

What shows in Device Manager when you click the "+" sign?

If the Modem is never Found on reboot how do you know what to install manually? What method are you using to manually install?

If this is a PCI Modem, you'll need to get someone to physically remove the Modem Card from the PCI Slot and reboot without the modem.

Next, shutdown, Re-install the Modem in the first PCI slot and reboot.

If Windows refuses to automatically detect the Modem, you may have a bad Modem.

There may be some better info at this link.

In device mgr it says "Agere Systems Usb 2.9 Soft Modem. Driver is 2.1.7 dtd 4/28/2006.
Device mgr says it is working properly.
I know what it is because I installed it two years ago.
This last installation I used the CD that came with it.
It was working before I reinstalled WXP now it is not initializing (3).
Maybe it has quit working all together, but I doubt it. I am leaning toward a setup problem, but don't know where to go from here
