Hi,
I'm looking to buy an additional HDD for my computer, as my default C drive is running low on disk space... and I was wondering if someone could give me advice on where I start... I would like to buy the HDD from dabs.com, as I trust this company and they have been useful in the past when buying things for the computer... however, I don't know what type of HDD I could buy - or understand what type I need!
Can anyone help me, and possibly point me in the direction of some good examples.
I live in the UK, and am a student - so I'm looking to spend no more than £60.
Many thanks,
Joe

You want an IDE drive, which is the most common. They are all good and should work on your machine. I suggest picking out the size you want and look for the best deal. Personally I prefer Maxtor but that's just me.

Hi Joe,
Have a look at this.

Savastore is the on-line division of Watford Electronics, a long established and reputable firm.
This is a Seagate which I prefere, but then thats just me. They have never let me down.

buy a hard drive from outpost.com since they are cheap there and they are pretty big for cheap price

Buying from outpost.com might be fine if you live in the US but if you live in the UK it might not be so cheap by the time VAT and customs duties are paid not to mention problems if it is faulty and has to be returned.

I prefer Western Digital or Maxtor...from my experiences, when someone comes to me with a bad HDD, it's been a Seagate...
Do you know what size/speed HDD you have now? You didn't give any system specs, but your new HDD will probably be faster than your old HDD, so you might wanna think about transferring everything to the new HDD & keeping your old one as the storage drive...just a thought.
I'd get a 7200rpm drive with 8mb buffer...largest capacity that you can afford. I don't know about the UK, but here in the US, you can usually get HDD's for about $1/GB after rebate...I haven't really looked at online prices to see how they compare...

Have A look At That!!

I have no idea if you have stores such as Circuit City or OfficeMax in the UK. But in today's paper, OfficeMax has a Western Digital 120GB drive for $70 after rebate...that's about 58 cents/GB!

Thanks guys!!
You've been a great help!!
My current HDD is 55.8GB according to the properties in My Computer, not sure about the speed.
I'll let you know how I get on!!
Thanks again!!
Joe
