Subject: Advice on building a PC
OS: Windows XP Pro SP1
CPU/Ram: Pentium III 866mhz copper
Comment:

I am thinking of building a PC. I would like your advice on what would be better and lower in cost. The Pc will be used to run Linux and Windows XP/Vista and would like to also run 64 bit OSes. I want a low cost gaming system but i don't mind playing games a medium ot low(unless the graphix are really crappy)

The components i am thinking to buy are the following:

CPU:
Sempron 64 2800+ - 3100+ on a 754 socket 256kb cache
(might be overclocking this)

Motherboard:
Gigabyte K8NS 754 nForce3 3 DDR Aud+Lan 5PCI

ASUS K8N nForce3 5PCI 3DDR

MSI K8NNEOV nForce3 250gb Socket 754 2DDR Aud+Lan 5pci

Ecs 755-a2 s754 Ddr400 Lan+Aud

Memory:

512mb PC3200 DDR ram

Graphic card:

ATI Radeon Sapphire 9250/9550/9600 128megs
Nvidia Fx 5200 128mb
(not sure if ATI or nVidia is better for low cost gaming card)

Power Supply:

Not sure about this i don't know what power rating i need for this setup.

Here in Canada this is about 400$(tax included)

thanks

The newer games like BattleField 2 take alot of power and memory to play well. I know alot of the new games recommend a minimum of 1Gig of ram. You should really consider atleast 1 GIG of ram, Newegg.com usually have deals on memory. Thats where i get most of my parts from. I would get atleast an ATI 9600 probably even a 9800 and nVidia Fx 5200 probably aint gonna get the job done either. Theres alot of websites that do benchmarking tests and comparisons, so just do a little research and pick whats best for what you want to use it for. For the power supply i would go with atleast 400W. Like Sabertooth said if you want to build a system that will last and not be out of date in a year or two your probably going to have to spend more than 400, unless you got some great deals.

actually sabertooth you are wrong....i built a 500 dollar computer and i get 1000fps(ya thats right 1000 not 100 or 10 but 1000) in q3 and 60fps+ in most new release games....

1)to get the lowest cost possible shopping for prices is the hard part. at www.geeks.com you can find a 2.8 p4 cpu w/ 1 mb cache and 800fsb for around 150
2)a video card like nvidea's 6600gt or atis' x700 would cost you around 120 if you can find it in that price
3)hdd 200gigs you can find for around 80 bucks at www.outpost.com
4)ram - $70- pc3200 1gig at anywhere
5)nvidea uses more technology on pixel pipelines while ati uses mre effort on gpu or vpu
6)mobo would cost you around 60

Its all good

C_pantel don't give the guy false hopes.

Depending on where the guy is at in Canada, tax could be anywhere from 7% to 15%. Let's say we use 8% tax since he said tax included.

375 + 30 (8%) = $405 Canadian money, here in the US that would be about $325.00
