Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice, my computer has just packed in and I'm looking to build a new one! I built the old one but got everything bought for me so it was just a case of joing the bits together but this time I am hving to go buy the stuff myself.

I have just bought 512mb of PC133 SD RAM before my computer jacked in so would quite like to be able to use this memory and also have a nForce PCI video card and a Sound Blaster audigy card. And I have the usual stuff like hard drives (both fairly new) CD drives, floppy etc which i'd like to use if possible to keep cost down. i was hoping t spend less than 200 brittish pounds but not sure if thats realistic.

What i'm looking for is some suggestions on places to buy and also suggestions on motherboard and processor?

Also is there anything else i should buy or can most of it be salvaged from the old computer?

Thanks alot

Stevie

Motherboards are getting fewer daily that use PC133. In fact I dont think they are making anymore now. Pricewatch.com is where you can find most anything you need.

yea, you're probably not gonna find any boards that use PC133 anymore...unless you buy a used one or go to a surplus site. And PCI video cards are just as "old news" as PC133 RAM.

You're looking at a complete rebuild. How about explaining what happened to your old system...maybe it can be resurrected?

To be honest i don't know whats happened to the old one its basically not starting and when it does some times it oads into windows(all thats installed at moment) other times it won't, Basically its been Used and Abused for the past four years, cos i'm still young and learning so think it's time for a commplete rebuild any way was just looking to see if any money could be saved cos the graphics card is only 6month old its good enough for what i need i don't game at all!

so whats the best motherboard and processor to go for?

Is it still pentium or should i look at an AMD?

AMD would be a cheaper route for you. I personally recommend AMD, but you'll hear many arguments between the 2.
If your looking for a general purpose PC to just get on-line and do school work, they have some all-in-one mobos out there. Then all you would need is the newer ram and a cpu.
The one I built for my niece for college has on-board video plus an AGP slot should she want to upgrade some day.
