Subject: Additional 512 Mb memory ram?OS: WIN XP ProCPU/Ram: 512 MB RAM |
Comment: Hello here are my spcs OS: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (Build 2600) (5.1 2600) Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz / x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7 / GenuineIntel / 1799MHz / 1 Processors found. NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 / \\.\DISPLAY1 / driver version : 6.14.10.7801 3DCard: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440, version 7.8.0.1 All right, many games now a days require hardcore specs but i cat afford more that what i have now, and franly i think its a desent system i have right now. However many MMORPGs and massive online games require ton loads of memory. So i decided, keck why not? i'll get it upgraded to 1gb ram... but the problem is.. for me to upgrade it to 1gm ram i need to get a better Inter HT or Dual core processor, if i do that then i'll need to get a new nivida card atleast 6 series with 128 mb memory capability. Since i cant afford all that.. i thought of this "cant i put in an additional 512 MB ram? woulnt that give preformance close to that of 1gb ram itself?" So is it possible to put in an additional 512 mb ram and get a better preformance on this system without changing no other hardware? right now when i run a game (www.ryzom.com) it lags heavily and i end up crashing out several times. Kindly provide suggestions ad thoughts. Regards, Cutie =^-^= *neko* *neko* *neko*

Reply: (edit)the only piece of information you did not give us was your motherboard make/model number. Visit www.crucial.com and see what ram they recommend. If your current ram is one stick of 512mb then most motherboards have at least two slots and you should be able to fit another stick. Your motherboard manual will tell you what ram limitations you have I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Reply: (edit)"The Crucial System Scanner has completed the evaluation of your system. We've searched more than 20,000 systems to list only the memory upgrades guaranteed to work in your Elite Group (ECS) P4VMM2." So i think the model is P4VMM2 then? (sorry not good on computer hardware part). It says all my memory slots ate full, but says i can remove inconsistant or lower one and put a new upgraded one in its place. How do i find out how many slots i have? and how can i determin which sticks have how much mb? btw i dont have a motherboard manual (assembled ...and not a company branded pc)

Reply: (edit)I'm surprised no one picked up on the fact that your CPU is running at the wrong speed! "Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.40GHz / x86 Family 15 Model 2 Stepping 7 / GenuineIntel / 1799MHz / 1 Processors found" Your 2.40GHz CPU is running at 1.799GHz, so your FSB is apparently set incorrectly. It should be running at 18 x 133MHz (533FSB) but it's running at 18 x 100MHz (400FSB) Your board has 2 memory slots, so if you have one empty, just add another 512MB stick. Your weakest link for gaming though is your video card. Here's a link to your board info: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Products/ProductsDetail.aspx?MenuID=22&LanID=9&DetailID=436&DetailName=Specification ASUS A7N8X-X Athlon XP 1800+ 8.5 x 200MHz 1024MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro SP2

Reply: (edit)Great response jam! you probably saved a lot of my money from my greedy brother! My system was not a poor useless one. My brother has been fooling be for a while now. That money hungry liar. Now i see that all i have to upgrade is only my memory sticks and GeForce card! "Your 2.40GHz CPU is running at 1.799GHz, so your FSB is apparently set incorrectly. It should be running at 18 x 133MHz (533FSB) but it's running at 18 x 100MHz (400FSB)" Oh gosh i overlooked that, i never realised it was incorrect. I'm not good with bios but can it be changed in the bios settings on start up? "Your board has 2 memory slots, so if you have one empty, just add another 512MB stick." If you are sure it has two then i think i have two 128 mb sticks? since many scans tell that all my memory slots are full. If this is true than i'll just have to get two new 512 mb ram sticks and would it work out? no need to change motherboard or processor? "Your weakest link for gaming though is your video card." I know its old and it has only 64 mb memory, however it is sufficient to sustain most games that has a load settings (the current games i have can set 32 mb, 64 mb, 128 mb) So the graphics arent too much of a problem i just might miss out few eye-candy but no biggie. i'm sure dad will get me a new vid card for x'mas. Thanks again, and even more thanks in advance to clear few doubts i stated above. Thanks all! Regards, Cutie =^-^= *neko* *neko* *neko*

Reply: (edit)If P4VMM2 is the correct board, it has 2 memory slots. I posted the link to the manufacturer's website above. If you have 512MB now, you don't have 128MB sticks, you either have 2 x 256MB or 1 x 512MB. I suggest you download CPUZ, unzip it, & click on CPUZ.exe...when it pops up, check the various tabs for info on your CPU settings, motherboard, RAM etc. If you're still unsure about what you have, go to the "About" tab, create an HTML report & post it for us to look at: http://www.cpuid.org/cpuz.php#download ASUS A7N8X-X Athlon XP 1800+ 8.5 x 200MHz 1024MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro SP2

Reply: (edit)btw i confirmed from my www.crucial.com report that i have 2 slots. "Your computer currently has 512 MB of memory installed; and will support up to 2048MB" "Your computer currently has 512 MB of memory installed; and will support up to 2048MB. Slot 1 256 MB Slot 2 256 MB" I think i can replace them with 512 mb sticks, with no hardware of processor change, yes? i'll download that for more details. Regards, Cutie =^-^= *neko* *neko* *neko*

Reply: (edit)Do you have the manual for the board? IF not, download it & read over the section on BIOS settings. Both your CPU & RAM are running at 100MHz when they should be running at 133MHz. There appears to be two jumpers just above the AGP slot for the FSB setting. JP1A1 for 133MHz: Short Pins 2-3 JP1B1 for 133MHz: Short Pins 1-2 I posted the wrong link above...that's to the latest revision of your board. Your's is in the archives: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Products/ProductArchive.aspx?CategoryID=1&MenuID=26&LanID=9 ASUS A7N8X-X Athlon XP 1800+ 8.5 x 200MHz 1024MB PC3200 2.5-3-3-7 Asus A9550GE/TD 128MB WinME/WinXP Pro SP2

Reply: (edit)umm.. the old one i have doesnt have HT support then i guess. None of the models on the archives have any details on them... blank pages all. Ayhow i'm giving it to a service man to fix it up, after checking i understood that those settings are locked in the bios.
