Adding second HDD to HP Pavilion

Specs: Windows XP, 1G
I have a PC running Win XP. I would like to add a second HDD from a spare PC that has Win 98 as the OS. Can I just add the second HDD, make it the slave and be good to go? Are there more steps? Will I be prompted at each start up to select the OS I want?

It is doubtful you will get Win98 from that drive to run on the new computer. You can use the drive for storage or if you have a Win98 CD you could install it. There is more to it than just connecting up the second drive if you could get Win98 to work.

No you won't automatically get a prompt to choose operating system.

Once you attach the 98 drive you may be able to go into bios and change the boot order to select the 98 disk as first boot device. You would have to alter the bios each time you wanted to switch operating systems.
You should be aware that 98 might have some trouble booting up in the different hardware environment although not as much trouble as XP would have if you moved that drive to a new system.

Is your XP drive formatted as FAT32 or NTFS?

If it is NTFS then when you boot 98, the XP drive will be unreadable.

My personal recommendation to you would be to simply attach the 98 drive. Boot up XP. If there is anything on the 98 drive you want such as documents, files, music, etc, then copy it to your system. then format the 98 disk and use it for storage space. Forget about dualbooting.

Thanks to all who replied. I did find this info on how to set up a boot to either drive . . .

Click Start>Control Panel>System>Advanced Tab>Under Startup and Recovery click Settings. Here you can show both OS and select the one you want to boot to. You can also set the default one and amount of time to display for choosing or ignoring.

I haven't taken the plunge and installed the other HDD with Win 98. If I do I'll keep the thread updated.
