Trying to find a hard drive to add as slave to gateway e-3000. Have found quantum fireball 10.2gig. Will a hd this large work in this old computer? If not where can I find one that will?

If for some reason it wont you may have to update your bios,

Can you give me an idea of what's involved in updating bios? I know how to get in there and have looked around some but what would I have to change?
Thanks.

Go to the manufacturers website and look for updated BIOS files for your computer. You will need to know the exact model. If any updates are available the attached text files will describe the reason for the update. If no updates describe allowing larger drives (should say how large) then a BIOS update will not help you. When you say you have found a drive, do you mean available to buy or you physically have possession of this drive. The reason I ask this is, if you already have the drive I would suggest you connect it as a second drive and boot to the system BIOS. If the BIOS can see this drive you can use it. The BIOS may see only a portion of this drive. If only a portion is seen you could use fdisk to partition the drive into sizes that can be fully used by the BIOS. If the drive isn't seen at all you may not even be able to use it at all. Most likely the BIOS will see it and I would guess see it as 8GB. Could be only 2GB. There are software programs that allow the computer to see drives that normally can't be seen or used. These programs work, but the downside is if you ever want to migrate the drive to a newer machine you will have trouble doing that. Avoid these overlays unless you have no other options.

To partition and format my new slave drive can I use the fdisk.exe and format.com on the hard drive of my existing master drive or do I have to put these files on a floppy boot disk?
