Part I
I'm installing a 2nd hard drive and need some help.
::..Conditions..::
OS: WinXP
Current HD: ATA100 own cable with no other devices attacted and on Primary IDE Slot.
HD 2b added:ATA66 own cable with no other devices attacted and on Secondary IDE Slot.Currently with this setup the computer boots up and the BIOS recognises the new drive on the secondary IDE slot. WinXP starts to load but freezes just before it shows the logon screen.
So Any ideas as to what to do next?
Conflict result from installing a ATA100 & ATA66 on the same machine?My next step will be to install both HD on the same cable/slot with the new drive set to Slave. But i would like to figure out why the currect setup won't work 1st.
Any ideas appreciated...
Part IIAdded 2nd drive to primary cable/ide slot and set jumpers to Slave, Slave with CLJ, Cable Select & Cable Slect with CLJ. Not sure what the CLJ is for but tried it anyway.
Result?. Same as before. BIOS recoginises it and WinXP starts loading but freezes just before logon screen.

If there is no data that is needed on the ATA66 HD, try fdisking it from a Win98 boot disk, then see if the machine will boot. You can then format from disk management in XP. I have run into the same problem also, but never really investigated the cause. Sorry I don't have the answer. CLJ is Cylinder Limiting Jumper. For example, used when installing a large HD on a system with BIOS that does not support large drives.
