Comment:

I have the problem with the Acer Aspire 1622LM where it overheats, with even moderate use, and switches off.
Can anyone tell me how, if possible without much expertise, I can clean out dust / lint from fan and vents?
Do I need to open it up - I'm reluctant to do so, as am worried about static (is that a problem? And how to earth myself if so?) But if it is possible to just open up the outer case and clean around without too much risk & moving things around, how would I do so?
Any help much appreciated, even if you could just tell me how to safely open outer case.

Thanks,

Joe

Laptops are great for plugging up with dust. I don't know how the ACER is constructed but I have a HP and it has a separate cover on the bottom to access the fans for cleaning... you can check for that on the ACER.

The other thing you can try is compressed air... not the stuff you get in a can (not strong enough), but a jet nozzel on the end of a shop compressor (just make sure it's relatively dry air. Blow it through the vents in reverse to the way the fans blow.

The other thing you can try is a vacumn cleaner. Duct tape the suction hose to the fan intake so that full suction is bieng applied.

If any and all of that fails, then you will have to pull it apart. Static is not a huge issue, but you should take the normal precautions

I have to respectfully disagree with Blackbill (again). :-) Vacuum cleaners have been known to cause problems. They can destroy desktops with a static buildup. They might be safer with a laptop, but I wouldn't take the chance. I also would not recommend using a shop compressor. If you do, turn the pressure way down. A can of compressed air is safe, normally comes with a small tube that can get into tight spaces, and will do a pretty good job. They can be purchased for less that $10 US.
