Acer Laptop second monitor not working

I have my acer laptop hooked up to my external lcd monitor. It worked the first few times I hooked it up. Now it doesn't work anymore. When I first turn my computer on with the monitor hooked up, the bios screen and windows splash screen show up on the external monitor. Then when the desktop loads, the external monitor turns off and I only have my laptop monitor. I've tried the Fn + F5 and Fn + F6. I've gone into the Windows desktop settings, selected the second monitor and checked the box to extend my desktop to this monitor. But once I select that and select "apply," it unchecks it. I'm not sure what made it quit working.
