Recently upgraded RAM from 512MB to 2 GB (now have 3.5 GB over 2 slots) however start up very temperamental. No issues until new upgrade

If you never had a problem until you installed the new ram, then the new ram is the problem. Try taking the old 512 out and see if the problem persists. There's obviously a conflict between the old and new modules. How did you determine what ram to buy? List the make and specs on it, so we can go from there.

Did you test the RAM with memtest86, memtest86+ or Windows Memory Diagnostic? That is the very 1st thing you should do whenever you install new RAM.

Have discovered that the RAM mix is not compatible despite Crucial advice. Ran Windows Memory Diagnostic with no errors reported. Now I know the solution will fix.
