Specs: Windows Server 2003
We are running Windows Server 2003 with Symnatec Backup Exec as our backup software. We are storing the backup data on maxell 170m/36gb DAT 72 tapes.

We have lost important documents and would like to browse the files stored on our tapes.

is this possible? and how?

We have deleted the media store list from when the backups were created within the symantec backup exec software... so we need to access the tapes as if it were a new server.

Any help greatly appreciated....

You just re-catalog the tapes and it will recreate the inventory.

Media Tab -> Media Location -> Online Media -> In Right Panel find the tape you are looking for and Right Click and Select Catalog Media.

Restore Tab -> Your Tape Should now be in the Inventory. -> Find your File and Restore it.

You will have to do this with all of your tapes until you find the file. This is why I personally threw all of our tape crap away and went with NAS Drives and used Robocopy for my backups. So much easier.
