access to hard drive denied

Specs: Windows 7, 2.798 GHz / 1982 MB
I was having problems access some files and changed security / sharing settings now cannot access the hard drive at all getting Location is not available and access is denied although hard disk shows as being there but with 0 kb

Since it boots you have at least some control.

Why not change the settings back using an admin user?

If worse comes to worse I guess you may be able to boot to a live cd and recover files. May be possible to change file permissions but that may get complex.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

I did not realise I was not automatically the Administrator now in Windows 7 (and it's the same in Vista) access to these rights is hidden. Managed to dig out via Google how to be Administrator and then was able to get access and change permissions.

Here is how to access these hidden rights.

Hope this helps others dig themselves out of the hole I found myself in.
