Access Problem with External HDD

Hi I recently purchased a HDD enclosure and a Maxtor 250gig HDD. I set it all up and connected it to my PC via USB1.1 (since my FireWire doesn't autoconnect or recognize Plug&Play somehow) WinXP recognizes the external component and the Maxtor is listed under Device Manager as "working properly".
Yet I can't access the HDD since it's not showing in My Computer. I hope someone can help me. Thanks in advance.

Have you partitioned and formatted the new drive?

I don't know how to format/partition it without it being listed in My Computer. Disk managment doesn't find it either.

What enclosure do you have? Does it support 250Gb drives?
