Very little if any. High speed wireless connections are only of any use within the LAN. The speed of you downloads is determined by the speed of your Internet connection which is usually a lot less then your LAN speeds and certainly a lot less than 54Mbps.
You might see an improvement if you have a DSL+2 Internet connection above 11mBs but if you only have a 6Mbs Internet connection it is miraculously going to turn into a 54mbps connection because you have added an higher speed LAN interface.
A network connection is only as fast as the slowest link and the slowest link is the one between you and your ISP.
You can increase your LAN speed with a 54Mps access point which should work just as well with your wired router but it wont do anything for your Internet speeds. If you particulary want wirelss then you would be better binning the wired modem and getting a wirless modem. It wont be any more expensive than buying a new wirless access point.

On my netgear RP614 v2 wired router I have a Buffalo 11 Mbps wireless access point which works with PC laptos and apple notebooks. Will it be to my advantage to go to 54 Mbps or 108 Mbps, which I will probly need to buy another router? What advantge will I see, e.g in downloading, uploading etc.

Unless you also upgrade you access point and the wireless cards in your laptops increasing the speed of your router will not increase your overall data rate.
