AC'97 mic not working

i just built my computer about a few weeks ago and it has onboard ac'97 integrated sound controller. i can hear anything on my speakes perfect but when i plug in a mic or anything it doesnt work. when i got to connector sensing it senses a mic in the port but i hear nothing when i try to record with sound recorder. no the volumes are set at high and mute isnt on. any ideas?
