Take a flashlight and look into the glass on the scanner. Move the light all around to look for any dirt or dust or scratches or such. Look at the while backing too for any stains. Look at the mirror inside, may have to watch it while running with sun glasses too.

If you're not seeing the line in the scanned image, go to wherever the printer's properties are in Linux and run a print head cleaning procedure.
If that doesn't help, if the cartridges have integral (built into the cartridge) print heads, remove the ink cartridges and wipe off the print heads with a moist tissue, install them again, run the alignment procedure in the printer's properties

Many thanks for your reply . The trouble is definitely in the scanner though. Jimbo

Many Thanks Jethro,
There are faint scratches on white backing and a 6cm scratch caused , I assume, by the scanning unit on the base plate - would that produce a vertical line that shows up on the monitor. I have no idea where the mirror you mention is situated!
In fact looking at a scanned image on the monitor there are a few faint lines showing other than the strong one.
I would guess that it has had it's day. Shame 'cause it's been a very good piece of equipment.
Regards, Jimbo.
