Comment: I am stuck with one question. A customer reports he installed a 600mhz cpu in his old pc and bios reports 300mhz at startup. Which troubleshooting steps should you take to identify the cause. A. Check for incorrect jumper settings B. Check for poorly seated cpu C. Check for incompatible memory modules D. Check for BIOS compatibility The only answers I have a choice from are above, there is only 2 correct choices. I have been reading and reading but cannot come to a definitive answer. Please help me! Reply: (edit)Jam, I love you, but I already know that. A poorly seated cpu wouldnt even boot up. I have read my 900 page a+ book 7 times now. I have been on google so many times in the book search they have to find out more info. I personally think it is A and D. But in this section I got 7 out of 9 questions right. Reply: (edit)A. Check the incorrect jumper setting. You're going to do this ofcourse..there's a posibility. D. Check for BIOS compatibility
I think the Cpu is not supported by the Motherboard you need to update the bios to a newest version. Maybe the newest version can support the subject CPU.

Reply: (edit)I have one more question then I will stop bugging you all. Which of the following are important considerations when adding memory modules to a system board. A. Access speed B. CPU type C. Level 1 cache D. Parity Ok I think it is A + D. It isnt to do with the L1 Cache as that is on the cpu. It isnt to do with cpu type because you go by motherboard limitations not cpu, when choosing memory. Theres 2 answers :D Living on a steady diet of....soda pop and ritalin

Reply: (edit)"I personally think it is A and D" That should have been fairly obvious, especially since you ruled out choice B (even without my help...LOL). If you would've stopped to think about it, what happens to a system when incompatible memory modules are installed? Looks like you've already got the answer to the other question too. Reply: (edit)Hi 1st you have to logically pick out the answers (which has been done,) you have to ask 'why' is it a,d if its not clear, theres some class acts here on c.net who will make you work for the answer just dont expect the silver spoon. and watch out for the windup merchants else you will be removing fishhooks for days after. remember the net is bigger than the A+ book eg: so more reading http://www.pcguide.com/ref/ram/timing.htm http://www.pcguide.com/ref/ram/errParity-c.html last resort; ask at pc world for /hits and giggles just dont buy anything. regards

Reply: (edit)Thank you 1stepbeyond. I know what you mean about the windup merchants. I dont want a silver spoon and I want to work and feel like I have achieved something. I have 5 questions I struggled with out of 50. I spent hours reading my books, googling and reading the a+ books on the new google service thing. These are the only 2 left that I couldnt answer. Also, I wouldnt be caught dead buying anything in the heavily overpriced pc world. My aunt made that mistake, she paid £999 for a compaq 2.2ghz celeron with onboard graphics and sound and a 15 inch tft. This was 9 months ago. Take a guess at how many times I have been to fix it................................its 9 times :D Living on a steady diet of....soda pop and ritalin

Reply: (edit)OK so you answered 90% of the questions right, but the best way to learn is by actually building PC's from scatch. I am talking 386/486/586, and learnt far more than I could from taking an exam.

Reply: (edit)Well, there could be any number of reasons the system reports the wrong speed. The system is rather old. It could use a jumper as stated above or it could still be bios issues. It could still be a bootlegged cpu. There have been many a phoney cpu passed on. The voltages on the motherboard might have drifted as well as clock circuits. Sometimes when you get in there you cut a cirtuit lan that goes to the cpu putting on the heatsink. I think the memory issue is the least of the ideas. Yes, a poorly installed cpu actually could cause the wrong cpu speed. See pinouts of cpu to see why but this also assumes which processor it might be. The question needs more info on a real world question. One thing I am sure about is poking fun at people doesn't seem to solve anything.
