A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart

December 10, 2012 at 05:12:56
Specs: Windows XP
My nan gave me an old computer and when I turn it on it comes up with the hp screen where I can go onto the boot menu but the bios has a password which I was thinking about taking the CMOS battery out to reset it and see if it works but anyway after the HP screen it goes to a black screen where it says A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart .

If this helps it is an IDE hard drive
It runs on windows xp professional
It is a HP Compaq dx2000 mt (Microtower)
Also if possible I would like to keep any files on the machine but I will completely wipe the hard drive if neccessary

What hard drive?

If you have a copy of the WinXP recovery console, use that to see if the C: partition still exists if it does, see if FIXMBR gets you up and running.

Sounds like the hard drive itself is toast. You can make bootable cd of seatools and run a diagnostic on the hard drive, a short test and then a long test. If the hard drive is the problem, no repairs you do will bring lasting results. You download seatools for dos and follow the instructions to making a bootable disk. When you start this computer make sure there are no old floppy disks or cd's in the unit and see if you get that error. It refers to not being able to read the hard drive which is most likely the hard drive itself being defective. You can replace the hard drive if the unit is worth it. The hard test works on other hard drives not just seagate.

Hi Sword,

If this pc has not been used for a long time, the cmos battery may have died and the parameters reset to the default settings.

If this has happened, it wll not able able to read the hard disc.

Leave on for an hour so, then enter the bios and check the disc settings etc.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.
