You can build a very good machine with that amount. Do a little research you will see, i recommend going for a quad q6600.

For that kinda money, you can build quite a good rig. The only thing that *might* kill you is the monitor. Do you need everything...case, PSU, HDD, optical drive, etc or will you be reusing parts from another system?

"not hardcore gamer"

Do you game at all? If not, you could probably get away with a motherboard with onboard graphics...you can always upgrade later if it turns out to be inadequate. Then again, low/mid range gaming PCI-e cards are relatively cheap (about $50).

This will give you an idea:

- Dual or Quad Core 2 CPU (many to choose from, prices vary from about $120-$280, not includng Extreme models)

- motherboard based on P35 chipset - about $100. For example:

- 2GB (2 x 1GB) DDR2-800 RAM - approx $20 after rebate w/free shipping, but you gotta act fast:

- 500W (or better) PSU with single +12v rail - about $75-100. Here's one possibility:

- low/mid range PCI-e video card, 256MB/128-bit GDDR3 memory, DX10 support - approx $50-75. Here's a good one:
