Although many are, I am not a fan of Mousepads as I find them fiddly, preferring instead a conventional Mouse. As an example I recently purchased a mini wireless Mouse in Italy for around £5 for use with a Laptop.
Another aspect is often Laptops require nearly complete dismantling in order to change a failed component. .e.g. I have a Packard Bell Easynote requiring a cmos battery like this. For the time being, I will live with the problem!
As a matter of interest, where are you based? I am in West London.
