512mb mixed with 1gb ram stick

Specs: XP SP 3, 1.20
Hello, I decided to upgrade RAM on a Compaq Presario C300 laptop, it comes with two slots for RAM which one of them already had one stick of 512 mb. I looked on Crucial and I got on line one more stick of 1gb.
I installed the 1gb stick on the empty slot and now System Properties shows 1.49gb of RAM, but computer's speed (loading up) did not change a bit. I don't notice any difference on speed (which was the main reason I upgraded) .
Question is: Would two sticks with different RAM size work fine on my laptop or should I have gotten two sticks of the same size of RAM?

The C300 series does not have "dual channel" RAM slots, so there's no requirement to fit a matching pair when upgrading the RAM.

I'm surprised you noticed no performance increase with an extra 1GB RAM installed.
All I can suggest (and it may make no difference) is you swap the modules over and see if that makes a difference.
